  • Hawkins & Keith make top 10 in growth agencies for state

    Hawkins & Keith Insurance Agency Inc. of Hodgenville has been named one of the top 10 growth agencies for Auto-Owners Insurance in Kentucky for 2008. The agency was recognized at a luncheon meeting in Lexington, where they and other recipients were presented with a plaque commemorating their accomplishment.  Hawkins & Keith Insurance Agency has represented Auto-Owners since 2003.

    Auto-Owners Insurance has been doing business since 1916, and serving Kentucky since 1994.

  • Sonora seeking ideas for former school building

    Sonora residents and others with ideas about how the town should use a former school building are encouraged to attend an open meeting Tuesday.

    The city earlier this year agreed to pay the Hardin County school district $43,000 for the former Sonora Elementary School. While officials tentatively refer to it as Sonora Community Center and City Hall, plans are not set in stone.

    “We don’t want to make any decision until we get everybody together and see what the community wants to do,” Mayor Larry Copelin said.

  • Guide to Lincoln Days distributed in newspaper

    The official 64-page guide to the Lincoln Days festival is included inside this week's print edition of The LaRue County Herald News. All subscribers received a copy and the section is included as an insert in all copies sold in local stores and Herald News rack locations.

    It includes a detailed schedule, festival map, feature stories, photographs from previous festivals and registration forms for various events. The section is produced in concert with the Lincoln Days committee.

    The Lincoln Days festival is held annually on the first weekend of October.

  • New Haven holds Iron Horse Festival

    A large crowd attended New Haven’s 19th annual Rolling Fork Iron Horse Festival last weekend.

    Numerous LaRue Countians participated in contests, booths and the parade. New Haven is in Nelson County, but located between the LaRue communities of Athertonville and Lyons Station.

    The festival’s theme was “All Roads Lead Home.”

    The event began Friday night with bouncers, concessions, demonstrations, games and face painting at New Haven City Park.

    On Saturday, the streets were crowded with visitors taking in the sights and sounds.

  • Mayor pledges no increase in water rates

    The City of Hodgenville needs nearly $1 million to pay for a new 300,000-gallon water tower on Greensburg Street.

    But that will not mean an increase in water and sewer rates, according to Mayor Terry Cruse.

    Thanks to several grants and the city’s policy of earmarking about $10,000 each month for the project, the tank is nearly paid for.

    At Monday’s city council meeting, Cruse said the city will pay only about $211,000 of the total cost of the tower, engineering fees, any extra excavation fees and for the site where the tank will be located.

  • Two students named national proficiency finalists

    The National FFA Organization recently announced that LaRue County FFA members Emily Johnson and Cody Sullivan were selected as finalists for National FFA Proficiency Awards.

    Johnson is a finalist in floriculture-entrepreneurship/placement. Sullivan is a finalist in turf grass management-entrepreneurship/place-ment.

    Each is one of only four students chosen from across the nation to compete for this award at the National FFA Convention this fall.

  • Landri Taylor wins Beech Bend Superstar Talent Contest

    After a two-hour finale Saturday, Landri Taylor of Bethpage, Tenn., was crowned the winner of Beech Bend’s 2009 Superstar Contest.

    She sang the Faith Hill and Tim McGraw hit “Like You’ve Never Loved Before” and finished in a tie with runner-up and recent Bowling Green Idol winner Kyle Whitaker of Morgantown.

    By virtue of a predetermined tiebreaker system, Taylor was announced as the winner.

    Elena Korol of Portland, Tenn., finished in third place.

  • Lincoln Days contest registration draws near

    Lincoln Days will be held Oct. 3-4. But several events of the festival require an early registration.

    The baby contests and Little Abe, Little Sarah and best costumed family contests will be Sept. 27 at the Hodgenville Civic Center.

    There are categories for several age groups and registration must be complete by Tuesday, Sept. 22.

    Entry fee is $10. Pick up an application at the LaRue County Chamber of Commerce, download at www.lincolndays.org or call the Lincoln Days office at 358-8710.

  • 4-H enrollment taking place

    4-H enrollment is taking place for 2009-10, school club meetings are being held for fourth and fifth graders. These students have the opportunity to sign up and participate in 4-H at school.

    However, 4-H is open to all youth ages 9 to 18. All current members must complete a new 4-H enrollment form each year in order to remain a member. 4-H Cloverbud activities are also available for 5 to 8 year olds. The 4-H year runs Sept. 1 through Aug. 31.
