  • Nicaraguans gain ideas to fight hunger

    Juan Maria Gea, a dairy farmer from Esquipulas, Nicaragua, and four other Nicaraguan residents visited Plowshares Farm Center for Education and Spirituality in LaRue County Sept. 28. The visitors from Esquipulas were in Louisville as part of a sister parish relationship with St. William Church in Louisville. St. William has been in relationship with this parish in Esquipulas for over 20 years. 

    According to Bob Ernst, founder of Plowshares, the group visited the farm “to explore our small farming effort and to share ideas about feeding the hungry.”

  • City Council passes 'clean up' ordinance

    In order to protect $225,000 in city revenue, Hodgenville City Council approved an annexation ordinance Mon­day night that cleans up some records on the books.

    City government is required to complete a valid map by Jan. 1, 2010, in order to comply with new regulations regarding the municipal insurance premium tax. The 9 percent tax that is added to property insurance provides almost a quarter-million dollars annually to Hodgenville’s budget.

  • Lincoln Days rolls out the memories once again

    The theme of Lincoln Days 2009 was “Lincoln, The Man.” But it may be remembered as “The Year of the Strollers.”

    Wherever you turned, you saw young mothers and fathers or grandparents maneuvering strollers through the crowd.

    Others carried toddlers on their shoulders or held the hands of older children as they lined the street for the parade.

  • LaRue finishes second in district volleyball tournament

    Top-seeded Green County won the 16th District volleyball championship Tuesday with 25-14 and 25-19 victories over LaRue County.

    As district runner-up, the Lady Hawks advance to region action next week. LaRue drew Marion County (23-16) when the pairings were set Thursday.

    LaRue County (24-13) rallied to tie Green County (25-11) at 8-8 in the first set and 18-all in the second, but Green County senior Becca Bush helped the Lady Dragons pull away both times.

    Fall sewing classes

    Master Clothing Volunteer Rosa Smith will be offering beginning classes for adults on sewing and pattern fitting on Tuesday afternoons from Oct. 27 through Dec. 15. Classes will be held at the LaRue County Extension Service at 807 Old Elizabethtown Road, Hodgenville. Call 358-3401 for information and to register. Class sizes are limited.
