  • Students can win $500 college savings accounts

    Two students will win $500 college savings accounts at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville through Aug. 28. The accounts are being given away by the Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust, the state’s official 529 college savings plan.

  • High school ACT scores show minimal change from last year

    LaRue County High School’s ACT results released last week show the school improving in science, staying the same in English and reading, but dropping in math when compared to the previous year’s scores.
    The school’s composite score on the test taken by juniors dropped one-tenth of a point.
    The ACT, which is a measure of college readiness, is mandated for all juniors in public schools in Kentucky. It currently is not figured in NCLB (No Child Left Behind) or state accountability, but results will be publicly reported.

    4-H exhibits returned from Fair
    The 4-H exhibits will be returned from the Kentucky State Fair and can be picked up from the Extension Office on the afternoon of Aug. 29 or any time during office hours after that date.

  • Showing rabbits: a rewarding activity for youth

    Because of the small size and limited needs of rabbits, owning and showing them is perfect for youth living in cities or suburbs who want to experience the rewards of raising livestock but on a manageable scale.

  • CAIP has funds for LaRue County

    The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approved $135,000 in LaRue County Agricultural Development Funds for a County Agricultural Investment Program at their June business meeting. The LaRue County Beef Cattle Association submitted a proposal to the LaRue County Agricultural Development Council and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board to provide cost-share incentives to area farmers.

    Extension District Board to meet
    The Extension District Board will meet at noon Aug. 31 at the LaRue County Extension Office. The meeting is open to the public.

    CAIP grant applications
    Applications for the LaRue County Agricultural Investment Program administered by the LaRue County Beef Cattle Association, are available at the LaRue County Cooperative Extension Service Office, 807 Old Elizabethtown Road, Hodgenville. Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. Sept. 16. Dyan Puckett is project administrator.

  • Grain field day and grain yield contests

    The annual LaRue County Extension Grain Field Day will be 5 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Kevin McCubbin farm at the end of Old Sonora Road, south of KY 222.
    This is the second year we have cooperated with Kevin to host our county grain variety plots and field day.

    All-season passes available
    All-season student passes for LaRue County High School volleyball, soccer, football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, track and softball is $50. Admission for individual games is $5 per student. Football season pass is $10; volleyball student pass is $15.
    Family pass for all sports is $150 for family members (parents and school age children only).

  • Hawks defeat Louisville Southern

    Usually hard work and determination pays big dividends for any struggling team. For the LaRue County High School boys soccer team, that was not the case.  
    Five weeks of practice in brutal summer heat gave these young Hawks confidence and a strong, competitive spirit.
    During the first game against North Bullitt, aggressive play and youthful mistakes resulted in a 4-0 loss. Take away two free kicks and a penalty kick and the result is a hard-fought contest between two equal combatants.
