  • Volunteer going strong after 23 years

    A volunteer can be defined as a person who voluntarily offers himself for a service or undertaking; one who performs a service willingly and without pay. That pretty much sums it up for Brian Sprowles.

    There are many die hard LaRue County Hawks basketball fans around the state but one would be hard pressed to find one any more committed than Sprowles. He is a 1992 graduate of LaRue County High School and the son of long-time and retired teachers from the LaRue County School system, Donald and Nancy Sprowles.

    Many coaches dream for their players to have a burning desire for the game they play. As a player, I had that burn from grade school all the way through my years at the University of Louisville. My life was softball, my desire was to beat the best, so I can be the best. Secretly, I wondered, did anyone else have that burn like me?

  • Community activist had LaRue ties

    Ruth Ball Mixson, 85, pioneer in the field of psychological testing for children with mental disabilities, educator and community activist, died March 17, 2010, at Frankfort Regional Hospital.

    According to the State-Journal, Mixson grew up in Hodgenville. She moved to Frankfort in 1947 after completing her undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology at the University of Kentucky.

    She was predeceased by her husband Ashley Mixson. She is survived by a son, Ashley “Tip” Mixson of Frankfort.

    Rogers Funeral Home in Frankfort handled the arrangements.

  • Fiscal Court approves salary schedule

    LaRue County Fiscal Court approved 2011-2014 salary schedules for elected officials at its meeting March 23 at the courthouse in Hodgenville.

    “Thirty or so years ago, fiscal courts set most of these salaries, but now the state sets the salaries of most of the county’s elected officials,” Judge-Executive Tommy Turner said. “Today, fiscal court sets only the salaries of magistrates (about $578.69 per month), constable (set at zero) and surveyor (also zero).”

    Council to meet

    The LaRue County 4-H Council will meet 6:30 p.m. March 29 at the LaRue County Extension Service office.  Anyone with an interest in serving on the council, should contact 4-H Agent, Misty Wilmoth at 358-3401.  The meeting is open to the public.

  • Heady honored by peers, students

    LaRue County’s 2010 ExCEL Award winner, Beverly Heady, was honored by peers, students, friends, family and several state and local officials in a ceremony Wednesday.

    The ExCEL Award, sponsored by WHAS11 and e.ON U.S. honors teachers who have shown excellence in the classroom. The program began in 1989; LaRue County adopted the program in 2005.
