  • Lady Hawks fall to Taylor County, 47-33

    LaRue County jumped out a 9-0 lead, but Taylor County’s Lady Cardinals fought back to a 16-16 halftime tie and downed the Lady Hawks 43-39 on Friday night.

    LaRue County got six first-frame points from Lyndsay Whitlock, a three from Nancy Howell and three points from Shana Zajdel to lead 12-5, but the Lady Cardinals (12-11) used six second-period points from Elizabeth Thomas to knot the score at the intermission.

    The lead changed hands five times in the third quarter with Hope Wigginton’s left-wing trey, giving Taylor County the lead for good at 26-24.

  • Sportsmen for Christ banquet rescheduled

    Postponed because of the ice storm, the Sportsmen for Christ wild game banquet has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Mt. Sherman. The guest speaker will be Jeff Eaton.

    Admission is free and door prizes will be offered. Participants are asked to bring covered dish to accompany the meal.

  • State contracts for debris removal while counties bear 13 percent of cost

    Individuals will not be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for extra expenses incurred during last month’s ice storm. That’s the latest word from the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management.

    In a roundtable discussion with county judge-executives and mayors across the state Friday, Gen. John W. Heltzel, Director of Kentucky Emergency Management said county and city governments can receive 75 percent reimbursement from FEMA for expenses directly related to the disaster. That includes overtime for workers, debris removal equipment and generators.

  • Series of stamps will mark Lincoln bicentennial

    Abraham Lincoln appears on more than 50 U.S. postage stamps – more than any other person. Four more will be added to his tally in 2009, in celebration of his 200th birthday.

    The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission joined the U.S. Postal Service in Hodgenville,  and Springfield, Ill., on Oct. 30 to unveil the designs of the four commemorative stamps honoring Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial. The cities will host the official first day of issue ceremony for the stamps Feb. 9 and they will be available throughout the week at the post office in Hodgenville.  

  • BBB to address Chamber luncheon

    Cathy Williamson, regional director of the Better Business  Bureau, will speak Wednesday at the LaRue County Chamber of Commerce's monthly brown bag event. The noon luncheon is at the Lincoln Museum Community Room on the square.

    In addition, Kentucky's newest member of Congress, U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie plans to attend the luncheon and will speak briefly. It is an opportunity for community members to meet Guthrie, who was elected to serve the 2nd Congressional District.

  • Homemakers learn to preserve heirlooms

    The South Fork Area Homemakers met Jan. 20 at the LaRue County Extension Office with Mary Lou Owen presiding. Hostesses were Hazel Hodges and Owen.

    Other members present were Virginia Allen, Janice Bowen, Sue Crutcher, Ann E. Flanders, Emogene Gardner, Norma Jean McDonald, Martha Owen, Billie Shahayda, Phyllis Perkins and Della Thomas.

    The club catered the LaRue County Farm Bureau Christmas dinner Dec. 12, the Area Eastern Star Dinner in Upton on Jan. 22 and the LaRue County Extension Banquet on Jan. 26.

  • Taylor tops LaRue by 30

    Taylor County tallied 14 straight points in the first quarter and never looked back in blasting visiting LaRue County 79-49 on Friday night.

    Chase Cox's 11 first-half points and eight more by Lloyd Stotts enabled the Cardinals to build a 39-16 halftime cushion.

    Tyler Hornback had nine for LaRue County in the first two frames, but the Hawks could get no closer than 19 in the second half.

  • Many thanks to all the workers who helped during the storm

    That old saying that opposites attract must really be true.

    Through this storm, I kept saying to Dennis, “Isn’t this just beautiful?”

    We live in the woods and though it’s dangerous, the ice looks beautiful glistening in the sunlight. He replies with obscenities I can’t repeat in the paper.

  • We must not be ignorant

    During a board meeting in a small mountain church, one of the deacons said, “Preacher, I think we need a chandelier in the church.” Another deacon spoke up, “No, I’m against it. Nobody in the church can spell it. Nobody can play it. What we need in this church is more light.”
