  • Opera salutes ‘A Shirt-Tail Boy Named Abe'

    Who stood 6-feet-4

    Out under the sun?

    That’s 2-inches taller

    Than George Washington.

“Abraham Lincoln” from “A Shirt-Tail Boy Named Abe”

The opera “A Shirt-Tail Boy Named Abe” was, by most accounts, the most unusual offering for the Feb. 12 Lincoln Bicentennial.

The musical theater was a production of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre and Schmidt Opera Outreach Program. It was sponsored by Lincoln Days Celebration Inc., Dr. E. Britt Brockman and John Kenyon American Eye Institute.

  • Visitors flock to park in Lincoln tribute

On Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday, his namesake park in Hodgenville was bedecked with yellow streamers.

The decor wasn’t part of the festivities, however. The caution tape warned visitors to stay on the sidewalk to reduce the chance of injuries from fallen limbs.

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site looked like a “war zone” after the Jan. 27 ice storm, said Sandy Brue, chief of interpretation and resource management. It was without electricity and closed for several days as workers cleared the paths of limbs and debris.

  • License renewal deadline extended

The state was late in mailing reminder cards for January license plate renewals because of a change in the way vehicle values are evaluated.

Deadlines for the renewals have been extended through Feb. 28, LaRue County Clerk Linda Carter said. The reminder notes went out Feb. 5 and arrived in mail boxes over the weekend. Law enforcement, including Kentucky State Police, have been notified of the delay and asked not to ticket cars with expired January stickers.

  • Frankfort hosts Lincoln celebration in rotunda

Abraham Lincoln was celebrated in Frankfort on his 200th birthday as state officials, invited guests and the current Leadership LaRue County class gathered for the Kentucky Historical Society’s midday ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.

The start was delayed briefly as officials awaited Gov. Steven L. Beshear’s return from the celebrations in Hodgenville.

  • School board: Skees questions transportation decision

The Feb. 16 school board meeting began with board chairman Ronnie Chelf clarifying the reasoning for his vote opposing the extension of Superintendent Sam Sanders’ contract at last month’s meeting.

Chelf said he received several phone calls asking why he chose to vote the way he did, and that people questioned if there was a problem between him and Sanders.

  • Contractors begin cleanup

Contractors will begin removing vegetative debris from Kentucky’s recent ice storm in Breckinridge, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson and Washington counties on Feb. 18.

The work will consist of removing fallen trees and branches from highway rights-of-way, as well as cutting leaning or overhanging trees that still constitute a hazard to motorists.

  • Magnolia man charged with meth trafficking

A Magnolia man is facing numerous drug-related charges.

Mark Sietsema, 28, of Lawrence Lane, is charged with possession of methamphetamine, trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, receiving stolen property, prescription not in original container and careless driving, according to Constable Tim Ford.

Ford said he observed Sietsema driving “side-to-side” on Ky. 470 and pulled him over.

  • Sheldon earns state championship

The LaRue County JV wrestlers traveled to St. Xavier High School this past Saturday and competed in the second annual JV state tournament. Out of 24 participating schools, the young Mat Hawks finished fifth. Three wrestlers medalled including one state champion.

Freshman Dylan Sheldon earned state champion honors in the 112-pound class with victories over Jacob McCarthy of Bullitt Central, Damon Reed of Woodford County and Kris Jones of Franklin County. After pinning his first two opponents Sheldon won a hard fought contest with a 14-12 victory in his finals match.

  • 11 Mat Hawks qualify for state tournament

The LaRue County High School Mat Hawks qualified 11 wrestlers to the state tournament in Frankfort starting tomorrow. The Hawks had five regional champions, three regional runners-up and a second place team finish.

Eight points separated first from second place this past weekend at the Region 2 wrestling tournament at Fort Knox on Saturday.

John Hardin edged LaRue County for the wrestling crown for the second year in a row.

  • Hawks rebound from Taylor loss

Taylor County tallied 14 straight points in the first quarter and never looked back in blasting the visiting LaRue County Hawks 79-49 on Friday night. It was the Hawks’ worst outing this season.

Chase Cox’s 11 first-half points and eight more by Lloyd Stotts enabled the Cardinals to build a 39-16 half-time cushion.

Tyler Hornback had nine for LaRue County in the first two frames, but the Hawks could get no closer than 19 in the second half.
