  • TLC students without power 13 days

    For Bruce and Maceo Arnette, the damaging January ice storm created several immediate emergencies at the Life Connection requiring quick and decisive action.

    The 42 youths who live on campus at the residential treatment facility were preparing for bed when the electricity suddenly turned their well-lit dorm rooms into pitch darkness on Jan. 27. What followed were 13 days of adapting to a host of unexpected problems.

  • Extension Expo is today

    The LaRue County Extension Expo, now in its 27th year, will be held Saturday at the high school gym. About 70 commercial and service booths will offer an array of information and giveaways 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

    The event, which drew about 500 visitors last year, features health information and screenings, educational services, free trees and mouth-watering pork burgers.

    “We’ll have a variety of booths and activities going on at Expo this year for the whole family,” said Extension agent Theresa Howard, who is organizing the event.

  • LCHS speech team finds success at region

    The regional tournament for the Kentucky High School Speech League State competition was held last weekend at LaRue County High School.

    LaRue County’s speech team now holds regional titles in two senior division events and a regional champion and runner-up in the junior division. LaRue County also qualified 13 other events in both divisions for competition at the Kentucky High School Speech League State Tournaments held at Western Kentucky University in March.

  • Free screening available for children

    The LaRue County Early Childhood Council is sponsoring a free screening for children up to age 5 today at the LaRue County Expo.

    An early childhood screening helps identify children who may benefit from educational services before they enter school and provides parents with resources that may help. Parents who are concerned about their child's progress, health issues, speech, vision or hearing may find the information helpful.

    The screening will be in the high school chorus room. Participants receive a parent video and children’s book.

  • State FFA president to visit Washington for celebration

    The next generation of America’s agricultural leaders will play an integral role in celebrating the industry during National Ag Day on March 20. Quint Pottinger, Kentucky FFA state president, a graduate of LaRue County High School and current student at the University of Kentucky has been selected as the student representative from Kentucky

    Student representatives from FFA, 4-H and AFA from across the country will meet with their congressional representatives and carry the message of Ag Day to Capitol Hill on March 12.

  • Main Street training available Thursday

    Local business persons have an opportunity to join local government, Main Street board members and staff at a workshop on economic restructuring March 19. The program will take place 1-5 p.m. at the Historic State Theater, 209 W. Dixie Ave., Elizabethtown.

    Main Street staff and board members receive 1/2 training credit.

    The session is free but reservations are required.

  • Get a good start on seedling production

    It won’t be long before tobacco growers will prepare greenhouses and outdoor float beds and start producing tobacco transplants. Higher production costs associated with increased prices of fuel and other inputs are among the problems faced by tobacco producers.

    Losses to disease in the float system could take an additional toll on a growers’ bottom line. Planning and preparation now can lead to better disease control and better yields of transplants in the spring.
