  • Time to sit in the dark and ponder

Some things I thought about while sitting in the dark after the ice storm.

•Flashlights and kerosene heaters are wonderful inventions. Having new batteries and fresh kerosene is even better.

•I had forgotten just how quiet the night can be.

•You don’t miss television as much as you might expect.

•I’m glad the neighbors have a generator to keep them warm. I just wish it didn’t sound like they were mowing their lawn all night.

•Reading by the light of a kerosene heater feels so Lincolnesque.

  • Give trees a chance to recover from ice storm

When I was a little girl, I attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with my mom and brother.

One year, an ice storm damaged some branches on the two big sycamore trees at the edge of the cemetery. I recall some discussion among the church members whether to cut the trees down – as they were advised by an expert – or to trim the damaged branches and give the trees a second chance.

Being a bit of a tree-hugger back then, I was glad when the adults decided to do the only wise thing by giving the trees a chance to recover.

  • Lincoln took inspiration from the Bible

The faith of Abraham Lincoln is best expressed in the phrase he coined, “one nation under God.” He was inspired by the Bible and by God’s direction in his life and the country’s life.

God is mentioned in many of Lincoln’s speeches. In 1861 when Lincoln left Springfield for Washington, he said at the train depot, “Without the assistance of that Divine Being ... I cannot succeed. With that assistance, I cannot fail.”

  • New cent brings wealth to sellers

The new Lincoln penny, unveiled in Hodgenville in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday Feb. 12, has proven to be a good investment for the coin collectors who attended the ceremony.

On eBay, the online auction site, full rolls of the new pennies depicting Lincoln’s birthplace cabin on the reverse are bringing $20 to $40 each. Single coins are bringing $2.50 to $9.95 each.

  • What are your views on God’s love?

A survey was conducted among some 4- to 8-year-olds as to their “views on love.” The following would represent some answers they gave: “Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving lotion and they go out and smell each other.”

We all have our ideas about love, but the best ones come from God. Paul in Romans 12:9-10 tells us that love is a matter of doing something. He says, “don’t just pretend you love someone. Really love them and have genuine affection.”

  • Hart County downs Lady Hawks

Hart County went on a 13-0 run to end the first quarter of its District 18 match-up with LaRue’s Lady Hawks and never looked back last week in posting a 78-41 win Feb. 24.

“We did a lot of good things this season,” said coach Travis Wootton after his team’s season-ending defeat. “We had two goals ... to have a winning record and to make the region. We just fell a little short on that last one.”

  • Fiscal Court approves zoning updates

LaRue County Fiscal Court approved updating and correcting parts of the Land of Lincoln Planning and Zoning ordinance at its meeting Feb. 24 at the courthouse in Hodgenville.

“It’s a ‘cleanup’ ordinance that doesn’t change anything the P&Z is doing,” said Tommy Turner, county judge-executive. “It ensures that what they are currently doing is correct in their ordinance.”
