  • Hawks upset DuPont Manual

    What a thrill in the "Ville."

    Underdogs from the first pitch, LaRue stunned sixth-ranked DuPont Manual Tuesday in Louisville at historical Derby City Field 2-1.

    Coach Chris Price was more than pleased with the turnout but credited the win to a great practice Monday.

    "That's what happens when we have a good practice," he told his team after the game, "you guys did a great job today."

    It is one of those games that the seniors will be telling their kids about in years to come.

  • Softball Fun Day planned

    LaRue County Youth Softball is having fun day Saturday, May 16, at LaRue County Parks and Recreation to kick off the season. There will be a benefit auction, a cornhole tournament, games and scrimmages for all the teams.

  • 4-H members compete in variety show

    LaRue County 4-H members excelled April 18 in Washington County at the Area 4-H Variety Show. As a group, the participants won three grand champion honors and one reserve champion award.

    The members first competed at the LaRue County 4-H Talent Show. The winning acts at the county level then advanced to compete at the Area 4-H Variety Show. The acts are divided into two age groups: juniors ages 9-14 and seniors ages 14-18. The acts are divided by category. The categories include vocal, instrumental, physical skills and theatrical.

  • Car hydroplanes, strikes utility pole

    Michael Maggard, 19, of Hodgenville, escaped serious injury when he lost control of his car Friday afternoon.

    About 4:45 p.m., Maggard’s 1988 Chevrolet Camaro hydroplaned when it hit a patch of water on Campbellsville Road just outside city limits. The car struck two driveway culverts and two signs before its final collision with a telephone pole in front of 1368 Campbellsville Road.

    It took about four hours to clear the scene and replace the pole.

  • Herald News staffers recognized

    Two LaRue County Herald News staffers were recognized by parent company LCNI in the annual editorial contest.

    Editor Linda Ireland won second in best ongoing coverage for Lincoln Bicentennial stories.

    General Manager Ben Sheroan won the excellence in editorial writing for daily newspapers for editorials he wrote while employed by The News-Enterprise.

  • WJCR holds Food Ministry Benefit today

    Christian radio station WJCR plans to have its third annual Food Ministry Benefit beginning at 1 p.m. EDT Saturday to help feed needy families and entertain those who go with music and other activities.

    The big draw will be Inspirational Country Music Awards winner Tommy Brandt, who will perform during a 7 p.m. concert, station Vice President Lauree Powell said.

  • ECTC holds graduation tonight

    Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will hold its 44th annual commencement at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, in the gymnasium at Central Hardin High School in Elizabethtown.

    The commencement address will be delivered ECTC alumni Col. Mauhee Edmonson, mobilized senior nurse and executive and deputy commander of nursing at Fort Knox’s U.S. Army Medical Department. He will address about 155 graduates who are expected to march at the ceremony.

  • Lady Hawks to be honored in May 12 ceremony

    The LaRue County High School Lady Hawks softball team will honor several former players and retire the jerseys of three players in a May 12 ceremony.

    “… The program has taken a look at all the former Lady Hawks, and will retire the numbers of three most dominant players in our program’s history,” said head coach Mielle DiStefano.

  • Family’s boa still squeezin’ after freezin’

    In her 36 years as administrator of Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Hodgenville, Daphne Loyall has experienced her share of emergencies.

    The late January ice storm that knocked out electric power to her home on Salem Church Road for 10 days, however, put her in the role of saving an unusual potential victim – the family’s 11-foot-long, 25-pound red-tail boa constrictor.

    The boa was a gift to her son Zach about 12 years ago. At that time, it was only about one foot long.

  • Adoption Support group plans training in E'town

    Adoption Support for Kentucky Support will have support and training on “Creating Life Books for Foster and Adoptive Children” from 7 to 9 p.m. May 15; and “Stable and Resilient Children” 1-3 p.m. May 16 at the DCBS office, 916 N. Mulberry St., Elizabethtown.

    Refreshments and child care will be provided.

    Another training, “Nine Signs a Placement is in Trouble” will be 9:30-11:30 a.m. May 21 at Shoney’s Restaurant on North Mulberry Street in Elizabethtown.

    Meal will be on your own and no child care provided.
