  • Vazquez accepted in People to People

    Kiara Vazquez, a student at LaRue County Middle School, has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. Vazquez will join groups of students April 6-12 in Washington, D.C., to study leadership and explore some of the United States’ most prominent monuments and institutions.

    Vazquez was nominated and accepted for the honor based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

  • Girl Power Club supports community

    The Hodgenville Elementary School Girl Power Club meets once a month 2:45-5 p.m. with the coordination of Hodgenville Family Resource Center and Expanded Food and Nutrition Assistant Program. The mission of this club is to have fun while building friendships, learning respect for others and promoting leadership and community spirit.

  • City Council holds first reading of budget ordinance

    Hodgenville City Council held first reading of a budget ordinance Monday for fiscal year July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010. Anticipated general fund revenues are $875,500; operation and maintenance account revenues are $946,500; wastewater fund revenues are $496,360; road fund revenues are $42,000.

    The full ordinance will be printed in the Herald News after second reading.

  • Shining like a new penny

    Thomas Podnar pressure-washed the sculptures on Lincoln Square, then applied a coat of Butcher’s Paste Wax on Monday to protect their finish.

    As part of the process, Podnar heated the head of the 100-year-old A.A. Weinman statue with a propane porch before applying the wax with a brush. Podnar works for McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratory Inc. of Ohio. The project is in conjunction with the Kentucky Arts Council.

  • WKU students place seventh in robot competition

    Western Kentucky University’s electrical engineering juniors and seniors placed seventh in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Southeastern Regional Conference Student Hardware Competition in Atlanta on March 7.

    Eleven students from WKU’s electrical engineering senior and junior class participated in the Student Hardware Competition, which required teams to design and build an autonomous recycling robot. WKU’s robot was awarded the best mechanical design.

  • ALES dedicates conference room

    Students, faculty, and staff at Abraham Lincoln Elementary recently dedicated their conference room to the honor and memory of school council member Sean Gearon who died unexpectedly last fall of a heart attack. Gearon, a six-year member of both the former Magnolia Elementary and new Abraham Lincoln Elementary School Based Decision Making Councils, was known for his passion for children and improving their education.

  • Carmen Drake named pageant queen

    Campbellsville University’s Carmen Drake, a junior from Hodgenville, was crowned Valentine Pageant Queen at the  annual pageant Feb. 13 in The Gheens Recital Hall.

    Drake, who represented Delta Omicron, also won Miss Congeniality. She is majoring in music education.

    Drake sang “O Mio Babbino Caro” from the comic opera, Gianni Schicchi. The aria tells the story of Lauretta, the daughter of a poor man, who begs her father to help her marry her sweetheart.

  • LaRue competes at Lincoln Heartland Conference Track Meet

    Ten teams met at Bardstown High School last Monday at the Lincoln Heartland Conference Track Meet. The LaRue County girls placed 10th while the boys placed sixth.  

    Haley Carrico led the LaRue girls with a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 4 feet 8 inches, just four inches shy of the winning jump of 5’. Tshacka Chirunga had a seventh place finish in the girls discus with her strongest throw yet of 74’ 4”.

  • Durham competes in LWC scholar’s day

    A LaRue County resident competed in Lindsey Wilson College’s 2009 Scholars Day Feb. 21 at the college.

    Mary “Betsy” Elizabeth Durham was among 69 select high school seniors from three states who were invited by the college to compete for one of three John B. Begley Scholarships.
