  • Dangerfield is new junior member of American Angus Association

    Paul Dangerfield of Hodgenville is a new junior member of the American Angus Association headquartered in Missouri.

    Junior members are eligible to register cattle, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

    The American Angus Association is the largest beef registry association in the world with nearly 33,000 active adult and junior members.

  • Two score in middle school meet

    Eighth-grader Jackson Venegas and seventh-grader Ramisha Jakes were LaRue County's top performers in the middle school state track championships.

    Venegas' throw of 118 feet, 2 inches in the discus competition was good for third place in the boys' competiton.

    Jakes tied for fifth place in the girls' high jump in the May 9 meet at Paul Dunbar High School in Lexington. Her winning distance for 4 feet, 4 inches.

    Their performances accounted for all of the team's points, which were awarded based on top finishes in the events.

  • Mather places third in Rotary competition

    LaRue County High School student Ian Mather placed third in the sectional Rotary speech competition March 26 in Radcliff. He advanced to the competition after winning the Hodgenville Rotary Club speech contest.

    He  competed against other students from the Pennyrile area. He received $100 for his third-place finish. ­

  • Senior Celebration is today in E'town

    Historically, May and Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Older Americans Month gives the community a time to celebrate, recognize and give back to the contributions of our senior citizens. Many activities are planned in our communities and across the nation to help spotlight the programs and services available to older Americans and their families.

  • Cecil honored for academic excellence

    A LaRue County resident was honored for her academic success at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia.

    Amanda Cecil of Hodgenville was recognized at the college’s President’s List and Dean’s List banquet.

    Students recognized at the banquet had been named in the last year to either the college’s President’s List or Dean’s List.

    Students named to the President’s List have a semester grade point average of 4.0 on a 4.0 scale in 12 hours of academic credit.

  • ALES students take part in spelling bowl at ECTC

    Two students from Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, Bridget Southwood and Skyler Hornback, will represent the school in the 45th annual North Central Kentucky Spelling Bowl April 17 at Elizabethtown Community College and Technical College.

    Bridget, a second grader in Heather Hynes’ class, will compete in the primary division.

    Skyler, a third grader in D.J. Canter’s class, will face off in the elementary division.

    Should either student not be able to attend, the runners-up, Gabby Sharrard and Hayley Cecil, will represent the school at the bowl.

  • Book signing set for Wednesday

    Christian author Misty Bozarth Terry will hold a book signing 6 p.m. May 20 at Lincoln’s Loft, 25 Lincoln Square.

    She will sign copies of her book “Under Fire! Find Faith and Freedom.”

  • LaRue students named to All-State concert band

    Two LaRue County High School band students, Jared Helm and Taylor Akin, were named to the All-State Concert Band.

    Both students also have been named to the UK Honor Band, Asbury Honor Band, All-District Concert Band and All-District Symphonic Band. Both received distinguished ratings at regional solo and ensemble festival.

    Helm, the son of Tom and Angela Duggins of Buffalo, plays French horn, mellophone and guitar as a participant in marching, concert, jazz, pep band and small brass ensembles. He also assists with the instruction of middle school band participants.

  • School employees honored

    Once each year, LaRue County Schools hold a dinner to honor their retirees and those who are retiring. 

    Four people totaling 109 years of service with the district will be recognized at the program at LaRue County Middle School cafeteria April 24.

    Two elementary teachers, Susan Phelps and Martha Page, total 67 years teaching experience. Both were asked what they would tell a young person considering a career in teaching.

    Phelps, with 33 years in the profession, said that the prospective teacher must realize that it is not a job, but rather a way of life.
