  • Paul Harvey delivered smiles for 50 years

He’s been called the most listened to man in America. Paul Harvey’s unique delivery, style and story-telling skill set him apart in broadcasting.

After paying his dues and impressing his bosses and audiences in St. Louis and Chicago, Harvey got a crack at a national audience. For more than 50 years, his news and comments broadcasts entertained and informed America.

  • Taking a tour through memories

If the statue of Abraham Lincoln, on the square in Hodgenville since 1909, could speak, what stories would the Great Emancipator have to tell about the many businesses, events, and people on the square that have come and gone through the years?

Although the statue sits in stately silence, some of the people who’ve been a part of those changes, such as Joel Ray Sprowls, vividly recall many things.

  • Mayfield combines with teammates for no-hitter

It lasted only seven innings and it took four pitchers, but it still goes into Western Kentucky’s record book as a no-hitter.

Craig Stem, Tyler Gilliland, Harry Stubel and Aaron Mayfield, a LaRue County High School graduate, combined to throw seven hitless innings March 31 as the Hilltoppers clobbered Kentucky Wesleyan 15-0 in a game shortened by a 10-run mercy rule at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green.

Here are some of the top headlines from this week's Herald News:

  • LaRue’s shot and discus tops at tri-meet

The weather was cold, cloudy and rainy, but it didn’t dampen the spirits at the LaRue County High School track and field events March 31. The boys’ shot put and discus throwers led the way with the boys placing one, two and three while the girls won three relays.

The boys and girls both placed second overall.

  • New restaurant offers lunch and baked goods

Owner and culinary specialist Jamie Warren, along with her mother-in-law Mary Lynn Warren and Sarah Roberts Anthony, prepare fresh-baked cookies, cakes and rolls, as well as soups, hot and cold sandwiches and salads.

Jamie Warren has lived in the Hodgenville area about 12 years with her husband, Bow. She said she is originally from Powell County where in her large family, large meals were the norm. A typical meal wasn’t much different from one served on Thanksgiving Day.

  • LCHS will host major track event today

The LaRue County High School track team is hosting the second annual LaRue County Invitational meet Saturday.

Field events begin at 11 a.m.; running begins at noon.

    Fifteen schools have signed up.

  • KSP planning checkpoints

The Kentucky State Police will be conducting traffic safety evaluations on roadways in all eight Post 4 counties, including LaRue, during the next month. Troopers will be conducting safety checkpoints on various roadways most often during weekend nights when impaired driving traffic is at a maximum. Officers also may initiate checkpoints at other times during the week.

The primary focus of these safety checks will be to reduce the incidence of drug and alcohol impaired drivers, however, officers also will be emphasizing the use of child safety seats and seat belts.

  • Hawks win two, lose two in Florida

Spring break is over for the LaRue County Hawks as they headed home Friday and reflected on a week of baseball, heavy rains and dodging severe storms.

The Hawks finished the week 2-2 at the Florida Beach Bash with a lot of focus on their pitching staff, defense and hitting game that was never really proven in the preseason or their first week of scheduled games.

  • Phoenix Club sponsors local events

The Phoenix Club is a student-based organization of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.

This spring the club is sponsoring two community events. At 11 a.m. April 11, the club will sponsor and participate in a Walk for Awareness at Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown. All community members are invited to participate. For each mile walked, one dollar will be contributed by the Take the Walk organization to a charity of choice.
