  • Environmental Center closed through May 1

    The LaRue County Environmental Education Center on Leafdale Road and the forest walking trails continue to be closed to visitors while ice storm cleanup is ongoing.

    According to Bob Sims, community development director, extensive boundary fence repairs have been completed for cattle exclusion of neighboring cattle.

    Sims said he was “very disturbed to find several cuts to the five-strand barb wire fence and four-wheeler tracks were detected while repairs took place ….”

  • Reducing mail service would save billions

    Remember when it was exciting to get mail with your name on it. As a child, it was like Christmas morning in the mailbox. But the thrill of seeing your name on an envelope loses its excitement with maturity and the arrival of bills.

    In this period of economic hardship, news of corporate restructuring, downsizing and a general woe-is-us attitude, the U.S. Postal Service has lined up behind the banks and carmakers in approaching Congress for support.

  • Raccoon negative for rabies

    A raccoon that was feared to have rabies tested negative for the disease, according to a spokesperson at the LaRue County Health Department.

    A Hodgenville man began rabies shots last week after he was bitten by the animal. He was keeping the raccoon in his apartment, according to police. The raccoon was found dead in its cage after being quarantined last week. Its head was sent to a Frankfort lab for testing.

    Sherry Grimes said preliminary tests received Monday show the animal did not die of rabies.

  • Tennis teams defeat Bardstown, Campbellsville

    The LaRue County tennis teams improved their records last week with wins over both Bardstown and Campbellsville.    

    Head coach Chris Estes started the season with a very young team that has continuously improved – placing LaRue in a strong position tournament time.

    The boys’ team (4-3) defeated Bardstown 4-1; the girls (3-3) won 5-0.

    In singles, Dylan Parr claimed an easy victory for the Hawks, 6-2, 6-0. Caleb Canter won his match 8-3.

  • 4-H Talent Show champions named

    The 4-H Talent Show was held at the LaRue County High School Auditorium on March 27. 4-H members showcased their talents. The participants were divided into two age divisions: 9-13 year olds and 14-18 year olds.

  • Reunion calendar

    National Guard reunion

    A 40th reunion and anniversary of the Kentucky National Guard, B Battery, 2nd 138th Field Artillery, is set for 1-5 p.m. April 25 at the Elizabethtown Armory on Warfield Street. All former members are welcome to attend. This unit was deployed to Vietnam on May 13, 1968. For more information, contact Al McDonald at 270-300-8106.

  • Sunrise Volunteers to meet April 28

    The Sunrise Volunteers will meet 6:30 p.m. April 28 in Sunrise Manor’s activity room for a semi-annual meeting. Nominations and election will be held for president, first vice president and second vice president. As a dinner will be served, volunteers should sign the reservation list located by the sign-in sheet in the lobby or contact Kathy Cooper at 358-3103.

    The next executive board meeting will be 3 p.m. May 4 at the nursing home.

  • Thank God he is merciful

    The story goes that a politician became very angry when he viewed proofs of his portrait. He said, “This picture does not do me justice.” 

    The photographer replied, “Sir, with a face like yours, you don’t need justice, you need mercy.”

    With a heart like ours, we all need mercy. Why should I say this? Because of scriptures like Isaiah 29:13, “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” 

  • Free financial counseling offered

    In light of the current economic hardships our community is undergoing Dr. Amanda Florence-Houk is offering free resource counseling courses at A&B Adult Healthcare, 2407 Ring Road, Suite 108, Elizabethtown, for those at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.
