  • WKU honors LaRue students for academic achievement

    Western Kentucky University honored 47 students from six area high schools for their academic achievements.
    The annual High School Scholars recognition ceremony honored students who qualify for a renewable scholarship to WKU.
    This year’s group has an average ACT composite score of 28.7 and grade-point average of 3.9 and included four National Merit Semifinalists and 25 Kentucky Governor’s Scholars.

  • FFA members attend rodeo

    Thirty-nine LaRue County FFA members attended the North American Championship Rodeo Nov. 11 at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Members could attain a ticket by selling 15 or more boxes of fruit for the annual fundraiser.
    The rodeo was held as part of the North American International Livestock Exposition. Members visited the Giant Country Store and watched events such as the Draft Horse show.
    The rodeo was the invitational finals for the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. Events included calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding.

    FSA ballots mailed
    The deadline for eligible voters to return ballots to their local FSA offices is Dec. 5. The FSA county committee allows producers to make decisions concerning the local administration of federal farm programs. Eligible voters who do not receive a ballot can obtain ballots at their local USDA Service Center or call 765-2702.

    Enrollment date change
    The enrollment date for DCP and ACRE programs has changed and will begin Jan. 23, 2012. In the past, enrollment began Oct. 1 for both contracts.

  • 4-H Calendar updated 11-21

    4-H Council
    The LaRue County 4-H Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Extension Office. The meeting is open to the public. Anyone wishing to serve on the council should contact 4-H Agent Misty Wilmoth at 358-3401 or mwilmoth@uky.edu. The council oversees the county-wide 4-H program as far as planning, evaluating and funding.

  • Piggy Bank Design Contest open to LaRue County youth; entries due Dec. 2

    LaRue County youth are encouraged to design and make their own piggy bank to enter in the annual Piggy Bank Design Contest. The entries are due by Friday, Dec. 2. Completed entries may be submitted to the LaRue County Extension Office, located at 807 Old Elizabethtown Road in Hodgenville.  
    The second annual competition is used to promote America Saves Week which will take place Feb. 19-25, 2012.

  • Soybean variety plot results now available

    The LaRue County Extension Service annually conducts corn and soybean variety plots in cooperation with a local farmer and participating grain dealers. Recently, we looked at this year’s corn plot results. This week we will look at the soybean results. They, too, were on the Kevin McCubbin farm.
    The soybean plot was planted June 17 and harvested Nov. 11. All varieties were Roundup Ready Group III or IV. The field was planted no-till following corn in Nicholson soil. The beans were planted in 15-inch rows at about 160,000 seeds per acre.

  • Lady Hawks hope to repeat as district champs

    LaRue County’s defending 18th District Champion girls’ varsity basketball team is out to demonstrate that last year’s journey to the semifinals of the Fifth Region tournament and a 27-4 season record weren’t flukes.
    “I think the girls want to prove that last year was legit,” said Travis Wootton, in his seventh year at the Lady Hawks’ helm. “We have experience and size.”

  • Experienced guard play will be key in Hawks’ success

    Head Coach Paul Childress is looking for veteran guards to help LaRue County High School’s boys varsity basketball team, the Hawks, soar through the upcoming season.
    “I think our strengths will be experienced guard play,” the coach, in his seventh year as Hawks head coach, said. “Our guards have a lot of varsity experience and should bring a lot of leadership to this team and I will stack our guards up with any backcourt in the region.”

    A baseball board election meeting is 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7 at LaRue County Park and Recreation. Anyone interested in being a member of the Baseball Board is encouraged to attend. For more details, contact Eric DeVary at 358-8386.
