  • The Street takes home 24 awards

    The Street, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College’s student newspaper, won 24 awards at the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association annual conference at Western Kentucky University Feb. 28. Seven were first place in their categories.

  • Lady Hawks blank Caverna - twice

    Good pitching and timely hitting is always a good recipe for a successful softball team. The LaRue County Lady Hawks did both in their win over the Caverna Lady Colonels last Wednesday in a 10-run, five-inning victory. 

    LaRue had seven base hits to go along with three walks in scoring the 10 runs. At the same time, Amelia Miller struck out seven batters while allowing just two singles in five innings. 

  • LaRue County Genealogy Society finds a home in police station

    After a three-year wait, the LaRue County Genealogy Society has found a home.

    The historical research group will move to the Hodgenville City Police station on North Greensburg Street after the first of the year – just as soon as the police have relocated to another building. The new police station will be in the educational building formerly owned by First Baptist Church on West High Street.

    Last week, members of the historical society met with Hodgenville Mayor Terry Cruse to hear his plans for accommodations for the group.

  • House hot for Mid-Continent

    Senior Alex House, who plays for Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, had five hits in six at-bats last weekend against Martin Methodist College and has a seven-game hitting streak.

    House, a former LaRue County High School baseball standout, is a centerfielder for the Cougars.

     

  • Hawks win district games

    LaRue County defeated district foes Green County and Caverna in baseball action last week.

    The Hawks outlasted Green 12-11 Tuesday night. Scott Cox hit two three-run home runs to lead LaRue, which overcame five fielding errors in the win.

    LaRue traveled to Caverna on Wednesday and picked up a 14-1 win. Slade Owens and Jay Eastridge had homers for LaRue. Cox was the winning pitcher.

  • Children of the World perform Wednesday in Bardstown

    A group of international youngsters will visit Bardstown with the gift of song.

    Children of the World, a choir of 13 children from Uganda and Nepal, are touring the country as ambassadors for World Help, an organization that supports child advocacy.

    The choir will perform at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Parkway Baptist Church, 2580 Springfield Road, Bardstown. It also will sing earlier in the day for students at Bluegrass Christian Academy on the church's property.

  • Developer waits on funding for Buffalo apartments

    The plan to convert the Buffalo Elementary School building into a housing complex for the elderly is on hold since the developer has not secured funding for the project.

    In last week’s school board meeting, Superintendent Sam Sanders said he received a letter from AU Associates of Lexington stating the project did not receive funding through the National Stabilization Program.

    In a telephone interview, Johan Graham, financial manager for AU, said the rejection “was not unprecedented.”

  • Museum opens Lincoln library on second floor

    About 120 people attended the grand opening for The Lincoln Museum Library and Research Center.

    The event, held Thursday in the Community Room and the library, coincided with the museum’s 20th anniversary. A slide show with 25 scenes from the celebration is online at the bottom of the laruecountyherald.com home page.

    The 3,000-square-foot research library houses about 5,000 books on Lincoln and the Civil War.

  • Debris disposal tops $300,000

    County and state road crews have removed more than 52,000 yards of ice-storm debris from LaRue County’s right of ways, according to Timmy Brown, county road supervisor.

    Brown, addressing LaRue County Fiscal Court magistrates meeting Tuesday at the courthouse in Hodgenville, said crews have completed debris pickup and are rechecking roads for missed debris and broken limbs hanging in tress.

    Tommy Turner, county judge-executive, told magistrates the disposal alone carries a $300,000 price tag.
