  • Bullitt East wins Semi-State

    Bullitt East blanked Elizabethtown 6-0 Saturday to come from behind and win the best-of-three semi-state baseball series held at LaRue County High School.

    The win earned the Chargers a spot in the State Tournament and was the Chargers' 30th victory of the season.

    After losing game one 6-1 Monday, the 6th Region champions had to wait through a rainy week for the rematch.

    Bullitt East won the twice-delayed Game 2 by 8-4 score Friday afternoon at LCHS which set up Saturday's deciding contest.

  • Volunteers recognized by L.A.C.E. Council

    Local volunteers were recognized by the LaRue County Literacy Adult Community Education Council. Each year, the council awards individuals who have given generously to the community.

    Renee Skaggs received the Judy Cox Community Spirit Award. Skaggs is involved in the community and a volunteer at Hodgenville Elementary School.

    Jill Gray received the Community Education Service Award. Gray has worked countless hours with school groups and individuals on recycling projects.

  • Cassie Thompson wins poetry contest

    Cassie Thompson, a student at LaRue County High School, is the winner of the 14th annual Classical Music Poetry Contest sponsored by WKU Public Radio and the Law Firm of Harned, Bachert and Denton.

    The contest offered students in grades 9 though 12 a chance to participate in an interdisciplinary project integrating classical music and creative writing. All high school students in the listening area were invited to enter by writing a poem inspired by one of two pieces of classical music. The musical selections were featured throughout April on WKU Public Radio.

  • McCubbins honored for academics

    Tyler McCubbins, a biology major from Magnolia, was awarded for outstanding academic achievement at the 2009 Lindsey Wilson College Honors Convocation.

    At Honors Convocation, the college recognized more than two dozen students for their academic accomplishments during the 2008-09 school year.

  • Wrighthouse graduates basic training

    Air Force Airman Jeffrey M. Wrighthouse graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, according to a Hometown News release.

    The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

    Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

    He is the son of Cecilia Semones of Magnolia.

  • Relics saved from Lincoln Heritage House

    Recently gutted by a fire that authorities believe to be arson, the Lincoln Heritage House in Elizabethtown's Freeman Lake Park may be rebuilt with as much salvaged material from the original structure as possible.

    “I want to try to get a cabin back up there if at all possible,” City Councilman Tim Walker said.

    Salvagers have pulled from the rubble a few iron pots that had been around the fireplace, Walker said. Some of the cabin’s contents dated back to the early 1800s.

  • Nelson County authorizes Sunday liquor sales

    Only two weeks after a Bardstown city ordinance went into effect allowing the sale of packaged liquor on Sundays, Nelson County has followed suit.

    Magistrates voted to allow the sales in a 3-2 vote on second reading, with Third District Magistrate Bernard Ice dissenting and Fourth District Magistrate Tim Hutchins abstaining due to what he felt is a conflict of interest. Hutchins owns a convenience store and is involved in a pending lawsuit with the city involving annexation.

  • Four-wheeler stopped by deputy

    An Elizabethtown man was charged with reckless driving and operating an all-terrain vehicle on the roadway May 24.

    Deputy Russell McCoy said he was parked in Buffalo when an ATV drove by his cruiser “at a high rate of speed.”

    “This four-wheeler came flying past the fruit stand and went in Y-Not-Stop sideways,” McCoy said.

    McCoy drove to the convenience store where the driver, Dustin Hathaway, 21, was putting gas in the vehicle.
