    A tradition of caring outweighed an economic downturn as the WHAS Crusade for Children set a new donation record over the weekend.

    All the talk about a down economy didn’t stop people across the Kentuckiana are from digging deep for the 2009 Crusade which announced a grand total of $5,289,841.

    Hundreds of organizations and thousands of individual donors give to the Crusade annually but it’s a network of more than 200 fire departments, mostly volunteer forces, that collect at roadblocks and fund-raisers that drive the campaign.

  • Diabetes classes offered

    A free foot screening aimed at helping with symptoms of diabetes will be held 9 a.m.-noon Friday, June 12, at the LaRue County Health Department.

    This service is provided free for people with diabetes. Appointments are required. To schedule, call 769-1604, Ext. 1035.

    Also, a class for diabetics about managing meals will be held June 22 at the LaRue County Health Department. The initial class is at 5:30 p.m. with follow-up at 7 p.m.

  • Woman recovering after wreck on KY 61

    A Hodgenville woman was injured in a single vehicle crash June 2.

    Amanda Marcum, 29, of Campbellsville Road, was driving a 1996 Ford Contour east on KY 61 near the intersection of Mt. Tabor Road when she lost control of the vehicle.

    According to Deputy Russell McCoy, the Ford crossed the center line, “jumped a culvert” and came to rest in a ditch.

    Marcum was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital by LaRue County EMS. She was admitted and listed in fair condition.

    LaRue County and Buffalo firefighters also responded to the scene.

  • Trailer damaged by fire

    Magnolia and LaRue County firefighters responded to the scene of a trailer fire Sunday at 263 A.B. Ward Road, according to Fire Chief Norman Heath.

    The trailer was extensively damaged. No one was at home at the time, Heath said.

    The cause of the fire has not been determined.

  • All TV signals switch to digital

    On June 12, all full-power TV in the U.S. will stop analog broadcast service and transmit only digital signals. Consumers who do not subscribe to pay television services and have analog televisions will need to have digital-to-analog converter boxes – and a good antenna – attached to their televisions in order to continue receiving over-the-air television programming.

    You’re going to need good ears and a bowtie to make the transition to digital television or DTV.

  • Lebanon holds professional disc golf event

    Nearly 100 disc golfers will descend Saturday on Graham Memorial Park’s professional-level 18-hole course in Lebanon.

    This is a Professional Disc Golf Association sanctioned pro-am B-tier event that features Hall of Famers David Greenwell of Louisville and Rick Voakes of Bowling Green.

    There are 90 spots in the field open on a first come, first served basis to all divisions. All players compete in two rounds and are eligible for awards and door prizes. There is a minimum $2,000 purse.

  • Nolin RECC holds membership meeting Friday

    Nolin Rural Electric Cooperative Corp. annual membership meeting is Friday with the business session starting at 7 p.m.

    Exhibits and health fair begin at 5 p.m. registration and entertainment begins at 5:30 p.m. Members who register receive a free bucket of light bulbs.

    The event will be held at John Hardin High School on W.A. Jenkins Road off U.S. 31W north of Elizabethtown.

  • Kentucky hunters bag record number of spring turkeys

    Kentucky’s spring turkey hunters set a new state record this year. Hunters telechecked 29,006 birds during the 23-day season, which ended May 10. This surpassed the previous record of 28,797 birds in 2006.

    LaRue County turkey hunters harvested 241 birds.

     “Despite the bad weather, turkey hunters are dedicated sportsmen and sportswomen,” said Karen Alexy, wildlife division director for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “They still got out there and made this the best season ever.”
