  • Sonora boy treated after hit and run

    A Sonora boy was injured Monday after he was hit by a truck on Maple Street, police said.

    According to a Kentucky State Police report, the mother of Nikki Meiser, 10, reported the hit-and-run shortly after 7 p.m. Monday.

    The boy’s grandmother, Loretta Meiser, said Tuesday that the driver was not located after the incident.

    Her grandson was treated for minor injuries Monday night and released from Hardin Memorial Hospital, she said.

    “There were no broken bones or anything,” Meiser said.

  • Newton named ExCEL winner

    A 30-year teaching veteran was honored by her peers and students in a ceremony March 18.

    Peggy Newton, a first-grade teacher at Hodgenville Elementary School, is the winner of the LaRue County Teacher of the Year Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership (ExCEL).

    The award, sponsored by WHAS-11 and E.ON U.S., recognizes public school teachers who show excellence and enthusiasm in their profession. The nomination and judging process is lengthy.

  • LaRue students participate in Governor’s Scholars program

    Six LaRue County High School juniors are looking forward to May, not for the end of the school year, but for the beginning of five weeks of intensive instruction in the Governor’s Scholars program.

    David Blair, Emily Boone, David Cruse, Eli Ernst, Katy Nash and Kellie Owen will know by the end of May which university and liberal arts program they will attend.

    “They choose some of the classes for us, and we get to choose some, too,” said Cruse. “There are a lot of topics available.”

  • Nash, Morris honored by ALES

    Abraham Lincoln Elementary announces its March Lincoln Presidential Cabinet recipients as Shirley Nash, an assistant in the highly structured classroom and Diane Morris, reading coach.

    In representing the classified employees at ALES, Nash, who works closely with teacher Sara Mullins, is best described in her nomination as having the patience of Job as she works with children with many different abilities and disabilities. She manages her time well and is a great multi-tasker as she attends to the children’s daily routines.

    When was the last time you cleaned out your closet?

    Chances are, there are a few clothing items you should really get rid of.

    How about that skirt you meant to take back to the store, but lost the receipt? Or those great shoes that never quite matched any of your outfits?

    Those fashion misfits can mean extra money for local needy families, thanks to an agreement between LaRue County Schools and the Goodwill Agency Assistance Program.

  • MATHCOUNTS competes at state

    The LaRue County Middle School MATHCOUNTS team of Jordan McGaw, Tyler Skaggs, Christian Pope and Zachary Thurman will compete in the State MATHCOUNTS competition March 28 in Lexington.

    The LCMS team of 8th graders placed third in the My Old Kentucky Home Chapter competition at East Hardin Middle School Feb. 28. About 50 students from seven area schools competed. McGaw placed third, Skaggs placed fourth and Pope placed ninth.

    Seventh grader Chance Johnson placed 12th individually.

  • Parks and Rec holds cornhole benefit Saturday

    A cornhole tournament is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at LaRue County Parks and Recreation. Proceeds go to the LaRue County girls’ youth softball league.

    Entry fee is $20 per team and prizes will be awarded: first, $100; second, $75; and third, $25. Deadline to register is May 14.

    The tournament is part of the LaRue County Youth Softball fun day May 16 at LaRue County Parks and Recreation to kick off the season. There also will be an auction, games and scrimmages for all the teams.

  • Bardstown changes liquor laws

    Grocery, liquor and convenience stores in Bardstown can sell packaged liquor on Sundays starting July 1. Bardstown City Council unanimously passed second reading of the ordinance Tuesday. May 12, allowing the sales in all three store types as well as altering the hours for Sunday liquor-by-the-drink sales. The ordinance calls for hours for all liquor sales on Sunday to be 1 p.m.-midnight. They had previously been 2 p.m.-midnight. The ordinance allows sales until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.

  • Hawks upset DuPont Manual

    What a thrill in the "Ville."

    Underdogs from the first pitch, LaRue stunned sixth-ranked DuPont Manual Tuesday in Louisville at historical Derby City Field 2-1.

    Coach Chris Price was more than pleased with the turnout but credited the win to a great practice Monday.

    "That's what happens when we have a good practice," he told his team after the game, "you guys did a great job today."

    It is one of those games that the seniors will be telling their kids about in years to come.
