A few of his cousins call him as Charles Ray. To his daughters, he is Daddy and to his six grandchildren and great-grandchildren he is Papaw. And almost everyone knows him as “Red” Hazle, but very few know him as a cancer survivor.

Eighth-grader Jackson Venegas and seventh-grader Ramisha Jakes were LaRue County’s top performers in the middle school state track championships.

Venegas’ throw of 118 feet, 2 inches in the discus competition was good for third place in the boys’ competition.

Jakes tied for fifth place in the girls’ high jump in the May 9 meet at Paul Dunbar High School in Lexington. Her winning distance for 4 feet, 4 inches.

Their performances accounted for all of the team’s points, which were awarded based on top finishes in the events.

Nearly 3,000 people gathered at a Spencer County, Ind., park May 14 for the U.S. Mint’s release of a new penny that pays homage to Abraham Lincoln’s boyhood years.

Several local residents attended the penny’s release at Lincoln State Park. One reported standing in line about an hour to purchase six rolls of pennies.

The coins depict a teenage Lincoln reading a book while taking a break from rail splitting.

Most of the pennies were sold at face value to coin-collectors; children were presented the coins as souvenirs.

LaRue volunteers raised $39,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life over the weekend. Organizers expect that amount to grow as teams continue to hold fundraisers and turn in dollars.

The event appeared to be in jeopardy Friday afternoon as a rainstorm crept into the area about an hour before opening ceremony. The skies cleared, allowing the 16 teams to set up tents for the evening.
