  • Church offers free oil change

    A local church is responding to the tough economic times by hosting a free oil change and car wash for single mothers Saturday.

    From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers from Harvestland Community Church on Lincoln Parkway will service vehicles for anyone who needs assistance. Inside the church, they’ll provide brunch and childcare while the car is being worked on.

  • Despite fewer days, Thomas turnout increases

    Kentucky Railway Museum employees took a risk this year when they decided to invite Thomas the Tank Engine for a total of four days instead of the previous schedule of six.

    The event, which usually runs from Friday until Sunday on two consecutive weekends, was only open two days each weekend.

    Lynn Dawson, marketing director with the Kentucky Railway Museum, said the idea came about when the museum acquired additional cars, allowing them more train capacity for the busy weekend.

  • Jakes Day activities planned

    The Lincoln Area Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation annual Jakes Day will be 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. June 27 at Tom Mattingly's farm at 446 Ramsey Road, Sonora.

    This event is for children of all ages and includes archery, fishing, target practice, safety program and 4-wheel demonstration. Dr. Paul Gerard will speak about his reptiles. Life Net helicopter may make an appearance.

  • Truck takes out phone service

    A section of East Main Street looked like a war zone last Wednesday. Downed electric and telephone lines stretched across sidewalks. A utility pole snapped. A chimney was toppled and shingles ripped from roofs. Cars were backed up as police and firefighters blocked the roadway.

    The damage occurred when a tractor-trailer hooked a telephone line – and kept going.

  • Football field refurbished

    In preparation for the football season, the field at LaRue County High School is being prepared for a fresh stand of grass.

  • Hodgenville police investigate shooting

    Hodgenville City Police are investigating the shooting death of a Buffalo man.

    Just before 2 a.m. June 11, dispatch received a call reporting a shot being fired on Maple Avenue.

    When Officer Donald Jewell arrived at 344 Maple Ave., he found Nathaniel Richardson, 27, of East Bailey Road, lying in the front yard with a head wound. LaRue County EMS arrived minutes later, but EMTs were unable to find Richardson’s pulse, according to Chief John Cottrill.

  • LaRue resident killed in I-65 crash

     A New Haven man died June 15 after the vehicle he was driving ran into the back of a slowed tractor-trailer on Interstate 65.

    The wreck happened around 8 p.m. on Interstate 65 near the KY 245 overpass. According to Bullitt County Chief Deputy Danny Thompson, Robert Swarm, 42, in a white Ford Ranger, was  dead at the scene. Although Swarm has a New Haven address, Assistant Coroner Sonny Greenwell said he lives in LaRue County.

  • Chamber banquet is tonight

    The LaRue County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual awards banquet tonight.

    The event will be held at First Baptist Church on Tonieville Road. Awards will be given for outstanding citizen, outstanding business or professional person and spirit. The chamber also has a table decorating contest for table sponsors.

    Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The awards presentation will follow at 7:15 p.m. in the sanctuary.

    Paula’s Hot Biscuit will cater the meal.

  • Long Lasting Auto Detail Shop opens

    Bill and Glenda Long opened their new business – Long Lasting Auto Detail Shop –  April 1. Since then, it has been nothing but blessings, according to the pair.

    Glenda, the daughter of Pauline and the late Buck Taylor of Magnolia, had moved away for about 25 years and had been longing to come home. Her husband Bill and she had lost their jobs in Charlotte, N.C., where they lived. Glenda’s grandmother, Mayme Clyde, passed away and while they were home visiting, they decided to call LaRue County home.

  • Public tennis courts in ruin

    LaRue County High School’s tennis teams have come into their own as regional powers in the past few seasons.

    The boys and girls squads have a combined 129-34 won-lost record over the past five years. Nine individuals have advanced to the state tournament. The conference champion boys’ team claimed its first-ever regional title last season. The girls were runners-up in both conference and region.

    They have accomplished these feats despite playing on four deteriorating home courts on Park and Recreation grounds.
