  • Lady Hawks begin softball camp today

    The Lady Hawks softball team will hold a three-day fundamental fast-pitch softball camp for all girls grades K-8 beginning Monday at Lady Hawk Field.

    Instructors will include current and former Lady Hawks players. The camp runs from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Wednesday and will offer tips in the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, pitching, bunting and catching.

    There will be daily contests and prizes awarded to winners. Each camp participant will receive a Lady Hawk Camp T-shirt.

  • Call Center brings jobs to area

    SYKES Enterprises will operate its newest state-of-the-art call center, employing 450-500 people in the next year, in Bardstown, city and county officials announced.

    The Tampa, Fla.-based company will set up shop in the Kentucky Home Square Shopping Center in the former Winn Dixie building, Nelson County Economic Development Agency President Kim Huston said.

    "Four hundred jobs anywhere in Kentucky right now is great news," Bardstown Mayor Dick Heaton said.

  • All-Star teams head to state

    The Elizabethtown Area Baseball Commission will host two Cal Ripken West Kentucky state championships – the 9-year-old division and the 11-year-old 50/70 division.

    The EABC 9-year-old All-Stars used a six-run second inning to down LaRue County, 12-2 on Sunday at Alvis Shelton Field to win the District 10 championship. Since Elizabethtown is hosting the state tournament, the district runner-up – LaRue County in this case – earns a berth as well.

  • Bluegrass State Games begin July 17

    The largest sporting event in Kentucky has opened its online registration. The Get Healthy Kentucky Bluegrass State Games will host 31 sports and more than 1,500 athletes this year including cornhole, volleyball and bowling.

    The Get Healthy Kentucky Bluegrass State Games will take place in central Kentucky July 17-19 and July 24-26. The Celebration of Athletes will take place July 24 at Applebee’s Park in Lexington.

  • Lady Hawk volleyball tryouts set

    The LaRue County High School Lady Hawk volleyball team will hold tryouts from 9-10:30 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday. 

    All players must have a current KHSAA physical. Forms are available in the LCHS main office.

  • Two veterinary diagnostic labs provide medical testing

    Kentucky livestock producers are fortunate to have two veterinary labs that support the animal industry with diagnostic medical testing services. The labs are the Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and Murray State University’s Breathitt Veterinary Center in Hopkinsville. Their goal is to provide services to improve the health of livestock in the state. Horses, as well as cattle are the main emphasis, but they do work with all livestock.

  • Free Movie Night offers ‘Tucker: The Man and His Dream’

    Francis Ford Coppola’s “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” will be featured at Free Movie Night Saturday.

    The event, which is sponsored by the City of Hodgenville and The LaRue County Herald News, coincides with the Goodtime Cruisers classic car cruise-in on Lincoln Square.

    The movie begins at 7 p.m. and has a run time of 110 minutes.

  • State to bear cost of cleanup

    The State Transportation Cabinet will bear more of the cost of cleaning up roadway debris left over from January’s ice storm, according to a news release from Gov. Steve Beshear’s office.

    The governor’s directive applies to costs of cleaning up debris along roadways in counties that were declared disasters by the Federal Emergency Management Agency – including LaRue County. Seventy-five percent of that cost is ultimately covered by FEMA, with the remaining 25 percent borne by the state and local governments in the form of “matching funds.”
