  • GEL-IN students compete with ‘Run of the River’

    The work of 30 teams coalesced into one final competition Friday afternoon at Pritchard Community Center, where eight teams representing the eight counties in the Lincoln Trail Area Development District presented “green” entrepreneurial proposals as part of Green Summer Forever, a six-week program created through the Green Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute (GEL-IN).

    Grayson County’s The Water Boyz took home the grand prize for best proposal. The group outlined a water conservation project that received backing support from city officials in Leitchfield.

  • Red Cross thanks

    Thank you to the 34 individuals who volunteered to donate blood at the Hodgenville Woman’s Club. Many thanks to the volunteers who worked: Cecil Druen, Jean Hornback, Elaine Cooper, Phyllis Blakeman and Rob Brown. Also thanks to Geneva’s Florist for their support of the blood drive. The community blood drive will return Oct. 13.

  • Magnolia man accepts manslaughter conviction

    A settlement was reached leading to cancellation of a murder trial scheduled Monday for a Magnolia man charged with the murder of a Greensburg woman.

    David McFarland, 45, admitted to a charge of first-degree manslaughter and accepted an 18-year prison sentence with a requirement that he serve at least 85 percent of that term behind bars. Final sentencing in LaRue Circuit Court will be conducted in October.

  • LaRue wins football opener

    The first game started slow for LaRue County's varsity football team Saturday. But the Hawks finished strong to record a 30-12 win Saturday night over host Campbellsville.

    Drew Newberry rushed for 122 yards and caught four passes for 95 to spark the Hawk offense.

    After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles built on a LaRue turnover to score first. The Hawks answered on their next drive to tie the score at 6-6, which stood at halftime. The Hawks dominated the second half for the victory.

  • Magistrates approve local jail policy update

    Magistrates approved an updated jail policy and procedure manual as LaRue County Fiscal Court met Aug. 11 at the courthouse in Hodgenville.

    “A lot of these items added in the updating are common sense things, such as ‘inmates may have toilet paper upon request,’ but since that is state law, they must be included in the manual,” Judge-Executive Tommy Turner explained to the court.

    Magistrate Scotty Lee voted against the update, saying he never had the opportunity to read the policy and procedure manual.

  • Indictments tied to ice storm thefts

    Two men have been charged with taking generators that were providing emergency power to telephones during the ice storm that struck the county in late January.

    Phillip Despain, 30, of White City Road, Hodgenville, and Chad Heath, 31, of Oak Hill Road, Sonora, were each indicted on one count of theft by unlawful taking over $300 and complicity; and receiving stolen property and complicity.

  • Cross country season begins today

    Running cross country is a grueling and demanding sport. Imagine yourself running five kilometers or 3.1 miles flat out, as hard as you can run. Not many people want to try it.

    LaRue County High School cross country coach Josh Henderson has assembled a team with a few seasoned athletes and several newcomers this season.

    Seniors Ryan Durbin, who competed at State last year, Truman Padgett and Alex Wood are expected to provide leadership. Also returning is junior Spencer Reed.

    On Aug. 17, the LaRue County School Board heard the following recommendations for personnel:

    Accepted voluntary transfer of: Bonnie Brown as literacy assistant at ALES to highly structured classroom instructional assistant at ALES.

    Accepted recommendation for employment of:

    •Lucille Buckley as preschool teacher for Even Start

    •Paul Richardson as technology resource technician at LaRue County Middle School

    •Rhonda Benningfield as food service temporary substitute at LCMS

  • Try these tips for homemade salsa

    The type of tomato you use often affects the quality of salsas. Paste tomatoes, such as Roma, have firmer flesh and produce thicker salsas than large slicing tomatoes, although both types make good salsas. Salsa can be thickened by adding tomato paste.

    Use only high quality tomatoes for canning salsa or any other tomato product. Poor quality or overripe tomatoes will yield a very poor salsa and may spoil.
