  • Board evaluates superintendent in open session

    The LaRue County School Board broke tradition at Monday night’s meeting by discussing Superintendent Sam Sanders’ evaluation in open session.

    The meeting started with board member Norbert Skees’ motion to move the superintendent’s evaluation up on the agenda, but receiving no second the motion died. Skees also made a motion to discuss the evaluation in executive session, but that motion also received no second from other board members.

    The superintendent’s evaluation is based on a series of questions related to different aspects of his job.

  • LaRue cancer survivors featured in photo exhibit

    “The Faces of Cancer,” a special photo exhibit, was unveiled at a cancer survivor celebration, “Hope Soars … Celebrating Life” June 28 at My Old Kentucky Home State Park. The exhibit features survivors from LaRue, Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, Marion, Meade, Nelson and Washington counties. Two Hodgenville residents, Sue Young and Ramona Coffey, are survivors portrayed on the exhibit. The exhibit, donated by Lakeview Photography in Bardstown, will travel the eight-county region, stopping first at Flaget Memorial Hospital.

  • Kentucky golf guide available

    The American Lung Association’s Kentucky Golf Tour Book is now available.

    The Golf Tour Book offers reduced greens fees and discounts at all participating facilities located throughout Kentucky, in addition to numerous courses and ranges in Indiana, Tennessee and several other states. More than 2,000 discounted rounds are included in the program.

    Valued at $5,000, the book costs only $35, or about the price of two to three rounds of golf. The Lung Association also offers a buy-three, get-one-free Fabulous Foursome Package.

  • Indoor grow bust nets 709 pot plants

    A Sonora man was charged with cultivating and trafficking in marijuana Thursday, July 16, after officers found an indoor growing operation at his residence on Oak Hill Road.

    Robert Allen Kincaid Jr., 38, also is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, second offense and possession of firearm by a convicted felon, according to LaRue County Sheriff Bobby Shoffner.

  • Teddy Bear Picnic begins at 11 today

    The LaRue County Public Library will host the annual Teddy Bear Picnic 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park. Bring a favorite stuffed animal and a sack lunch. Volunteers will provide games, music, stories and a nature walk.

  • Follow these tips when canning fruits and veggies

    Why is open kettle canning not recommended?

    In open kettle canning, food is cooked in an ordinary kettle, then packed into hot jars and sealed without processing. The temperatures obtained in open kettle canning are not high enough to destroy all spoilage and food poisoning organisms that may be in the food. Also, microorganisms can enter the food when it is transferred from the kettle to jar and cause spoilage.

  • Golf team depends on youth for success

    Having lost three of his top five golfers last season to graduation, LaRue County head coach Rip Collins knows this will be a rebuilding year.

    Gone are last year’s number one player, Bryan Bault, number two Christian Seymour, and number five, Alex Thomas.

    “We had a great year last season, with good play in three tournaments and excellent play at region even though we didn’t send anyone to state,” Collins said.

  • Our lives are so uncertain

    As I stood at the church door greeting people Sunday, I received a phone call that my nephew in Augusta, Ga., was found dead. What a shock!

    We buried his mother (my sister) less than three months ago. His father has advanced Parkinson’s disease and the three of them lived together, with my nephew caring for his father and mother. His father has been sick for a long time, so no one would have predicted that my sister and my nephew would have died first.

  • County Fair under way

    A trio of horse shows were scheduled to kick off the 102nd LaRue County Fair at the fairgrounds on Greensburg Street this week.

    However, muddy conditions canceled all three. Organizers have rescheduled the pleasure and open fun horse show for 7 p.m. Aug. 29.

    Through Aug. 1, fairgoers can enjoy a variety of pageants, snacks, livestock shows and demolition derby.

    Back for another year are karaoke, truck pull, backseat driver, poultry show, dress-up dog show, arena derby and cornhole tournament.
