The movie “We are Marshall” has a local tie.

Dr. Keith Spears, vice president for regional and professional education for Campbellsville University, worked at Marshall University during the time of the plane crash and during filming. He acted as primary consultant to the filmmakers and met many of the actors. He also knew many of the players who were killed on the plane in 1970.

Spears, who has oversight of the Hodgenville campus of CU, was contacted by Warner Brothers in September 2005.

The final film in the Free Movie Night summer series is “We are Marshall.” The 2006 movie will be shown on a widescreen at the Hodgenville Civic Center. There is no charge to attend and popcorn and drinks are provided.

The movie chronicles the aftermath of the 1970 chartered plane crash that killed 75 people including 37 members of the Marshall University Thundering Herd football team, eight members of the coaching staff, 25 boosters, four flight crew members and one employee of the charter company.

The final scheduled opportunity to register for the LaRue County Youth Soccer League is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Hodgenville Elementary School.

Registration is $55 including uniform or $35 if uniform is not needed. A discount of $5 applies for each additional child. There will be a $10 late fee for any signups after the Aug. 8 registration date.

Saturday will be a fun-filled day as Main Street and the City of Hodgenville sponsor the second Family Fun Day at Creekfront Park. That evening, “We are Marshall” will be shown as the final offering of the city’s Free Movie Night summer series.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Creekfront will be filled with booths and demonstrations.
