  • Barn destroyed in fire

      Three fire departments battled a barn fire Saturday afternoon on Carter Brothers Road.

    About 3 p.m., LaRue County Fire Department was dispatched to the fire. Buffalo and Valley Creek departments were sent as backup.

    Lindon Nevins said he was helping his son work on a car in the barn. Some gasoline made contact with a heater inside the building “and that’s all it took.”

    Nevins fought the fire before firefighters arrived, blistering his arm and singeing his hair.

  • Civililan furloughs could affect thousands at Fort Knox

    If government spending is slashed next Friday, thousands of Fort Knox workers could make cuts in their own spending, dampening the business climate in Hardin County.

    Planning for the potential trigger for sequestration, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said the Defense Department’s civilian workers could face furloughs, losing one day of work per week for up to 22 weeks.

  • Benningfield takes lead in 'The Marriage of Figaro'

     Brittany Benningfield will have the lead role in W.A. Mozart’s comic opera “The Marriage of Figaro,” which will be presented March 1-3 by the UK Opera Theatre at the Lexington Opera House.

    The daughter of Ron and Sheryl Benningfield of Hodgenville, Benningfield plays the Countess in the opera composed in 1786 which recounts a single "day of madness" in the palace of the Count Almaviva near Seville, Spain.

  • Protestors rally to save animal shelter

     In the cold wind, they lined the entrance to a place where they say animals are being mistreated.

    But their message is not that the place should close. They want it to stay open.

    “Save our animals, save our shelter,” they yelled.

    Raising homemade signs high to passersby, about 100 people gathered at the gates to the Taylor County Animal Shelter Feb. 19 week in protest.

     Buffalo and LaRue County firefighters responded to a complaint of a field fire Friday afternoon at the intersection of Morningstar Road and Campbellsville Road. It turned out to be a controlled burn.

     LaRue County firefighters responded to a field fire Sunday afternoon on Harned-McCubbins Road. Chief Jason Sadler said it started out as a controlled burn. The flames were close to a house, outbuildings and vehicles.

  • Tree blocks Bardstown Road

    A large tree fell across Bardstown Road near the intersection with Browns Court about 10:20 p.m. Monday. Visibility was poor due to the windy, rainy conditions, and two cars struck the tree, causing damage to the vehicles. It’s unclear if the drivers were injured. Windstream was called to remove the tree from their lines. Bardstown Road was closed for about an hour while workers removed the tree. LaRue County Deputy Robby Brownfield investigated.
