  • Secretary of State embraces technology for election

    Secretary of State Trey Grayson announced Monday that his office will be utilizing various techniques to communicate important messages on Election Day and to monitor the election.

    Grayson and his Deputy Assistant Secretary of State will be using “Twitter” to communicate to voters important information that occurs on election day. Their Twitter accounts also are tied to other popular social sites such as Facebook.com.

  • Band of Hawks rank fourth in state championshp contest

    The LaRue County Band of Hawks qualified for the finals Saturday at the State Marching Band Contest and finished fourth overall in Class AAA..

    LaRue's score of 85.05 earned the fourth-place spot in the field of 16 in semifinal round early Saturday at Meade County High School to earn a chance to perform on the championship stage Saturday evening at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville.

  • Turnout heavy for today's election

    Election Day has arrived and LaRue County  showed up.

    Four precincts gathered in the first floor of the LaRue County Courthouse report steady business with occasional lines in the morning and around the lunch hour. Meanwhile, voters have been lined outside of Hodgenville City Hall all day where the Hodgenville West precinct votes.

    Polls are open until 6 p.m. People in line at 6 will be allowed to vote.

    While much of the attention focuses on the presidential race, several local positions also will be decided today.

  • Registered voters up 17 percent here

    The number of registered voters in LaRue County increased 1.7 percent during the past year, according to County Clerk Linda Carter. Totals show 166 more voters than in 2007.

    As of Sept. 15, 9,978 people are registered to vote in the Nov. 4 general election. At this time last year, 9,812 were registered.

    Carter said 6,678 people are registered Demo­crats, compared to 6,640 last year; 2,823 are Republicans, compared to 2,731 last year; 477 registered as “other,” compared to 441 last year.

    Of that number, 5,149 voters are female; 4,829 are male.

  • Whooping cough has not reached LaRue schools

    The Lincoln Trail District Health Department issued a public health advisory Oct. 22 after children in three Elizabethtown-area schools and two daycare facilities were diagnosed with pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. Letters were sent to parents of children who may have been exposed to the bacteria.

    No cases have been reported in LaRue County, according to school oficials.

  • School Board approves personnel changes

    The following personnel changes were approved by the LaRue County School Board Oct. 20.

    Accepted recommendation for:

    •Extended employment of David Noe as LCMS detention monitor.

    •Employment of Robin E. Milburn as substitute bus driver.

    •Employment of Judy Lewis as speech therapist.

    •Employment of Hannah White, Emily Kessinger, Kirsta Jackson and Tara Warren as student tutors for ESS at Hodgenville Elementary School.

    •Employment of Garry Ross as Adult Education Instructor.

  • Free help for dealing with diabetes

    While area residents are preparing to elect a president, area health representatives are telling them: “Elect to Take Care of Your Diabetes!”

    That sentiment is the theme for the Diabetes Expo being held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Pritchard Community Center in Elizabethtown.. The event is sponsored by Lincoln Trail District Health Department, the Hardin and LaRue County Diabetes Coalition and Hardin Memorial Hospital and is free and open to the public.

  • Lincoln exhibit on display in Frankfort

    “Discovering Kentucky’s Abraham Lincoln,” a new Museums-to-Go exhibit developed by the Kentucky Historical Society, will be on display in selected state office buildings through the end of October.

  • BRAC visitors check out local attractions

    A busload of visitors from St. Louis looking for homes in the area were entertained Friday in Hodgenville.

    The gathering at the Lincoln Museum community room was one stop on a four-day, get-acquainted tour for employees of the Army’s Human Resources Command, which will relocate to Fort Knox as part of the military restructuring known as BRAC, which stands for Base Realignment and Closure. The guests are in various stages of deciding whether to follow their jobs to Kentucky in 2010 and where to live if they move.

  • Sale of Buffalo School approved by board

    The sale of Buffalo Elementary School to a Lexington company which renovates historic structures was approved Thursday at a special meeting of the LaRue County School Board.

    AU Development LLC was the sole bidder and offered $60,000, the minimum price listed in the district’s request for bids. The company plans to convert the structure into an elderly housing center.

    “It’s a lovely community and a beautiful school,” Holly Wiedemann of AU Development said in an interview Friday.
