  • Fiscal Court: Session includes deep water and budget

    LaRue County’s proposed 2012 budget will not cut funding to any agency, County Judge-executive Tommy Turner told magistrates meeting at the courthouse in Hodgenville May 10.
    “Overall, I’m pleased with the budget,” Turner said. “While most counties have to cut funding, this budget allows us to be able to pave roads and build bridges.”
    The $7,467,353 total is about a million dollars larger than last year’s ($6,466,117). Turner said about 10 percent comes from real property taxes while 90 percent is from other sources.

  • FEMA-provided pump clears water from Lincoln Farm Road

    Flooding at McDowell’s Lakeview Cabins, across from Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, has prompted concerns for the safety of residents.
    The flooding on Lincoln Farm Road became an issue around April 25, when several inches of rain fell over LaRue County.
    Although water levels in the small pond in front of the cabins have risen in the past, owner Gary McDowell said he has never “seen it like this.”

  • Primary election results will be available online

    Election Day approaches, but with no local races being contested.
    Only state offices will be listed on the May 17 primary ballot (see 5A).
    Polls are open 6 a.m.-6 p.m.
    Results will not be available in the May 18 issue of The LaRue County Herald News due to press deadlines. However, the results will be available at www.laruecountyherald.com as soon as possible and in the print edition the following week.

  • Heavy rain creates pain for LaRue County Road Crews

    Torrential rains washed down three tandem truck loads of gravel onto Peake Road near Knob Creek, county road supervisor Clyde Veirs told members of fiscal court meeting at the courthouse in Hodgenville April 13.
    “And we’re not done hauling gravel off the road yet,” said Veirs. “Mainly, we’ve been cleaning up the mess from floodwaters.”

  • County Clerk's office receives grant to buy plat cabinet

    LaRue County Clerk Linda Carter has received a $3,305 grant from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives to preserve and manage local government records. KDLA is an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.
    The grant funds will be used to purchase and install a plat cabinet for the storage of permanent plats recorded in the county clerk’s office.
    The Local Records Program is dedicated to the preservation and management of Kentucky’s local government records of enduring value.

  • Four candidates seeking Secretary of State office

    Four candidates are seeking Kentucky's Secretary of State office this year.

    Republicans Bill Johnson and Hilda Legg and Democrats Elaine Walker and Allison Grimes will face off in the May 17 primary.

    Republican incumbent Trey Grayson has stepped down to serve as the director of Harvard University's Institute of Politics. Gov. Steve Beshear appointed Walker to fill the remainder of Grayson's term.

  • Torrential rains cause problems for road crews

    Torrential rains washed down three tandem truck loads of gravel onto Peake Road near Knob Creek, county road supervisor Clyde Veirs told members of fiscal court meeting at the courthouse in Hodgenville April 13. “And we’re not done hauling gravel off the road yet,” said Veirs. “Mainly, we’ve been cleaning up the mess from floodwaters.” The rain played havoc throughout the county as road crews augered a tile on Polley, pushed out brush and re-cut a ditch on Cruse Road, cleared ditches on Peppers Road, dug out “pumped” areas on Wooton and Pickerill roads and sloped banks on Airline Road.
