  • Councilman calls cemetery financials ‘worthless’

    The Red Hill Cemetery Commission, composed of members of Hodgenville City Council, Mayor Terry Cruse, City Attorney Mary Gaines Locke; and City Clerk MaDonna Hornback, met Monday evening before the regular city council meeting.

    Hornback, the treasurer, prepared an income and expense statement from June 30 to Sept. 5, 2013.

    It showed $6,351.68 total income; $4,362 expenses; and $9,724.28 payroll, for a net loss of $10,802.27.

  • Slight increase in city taxes

    Hodgenville City Council set the rates for property taxes at its Monday meeting.

    Residents will see about a $2 increase on their bills, said Hodgenville Mayor Terry Cruse.

    Last year’s rate, 12.5 cents per $100 assessed value on real estate and personal property, was bumped by .02 percent. The new rate is 12.7 cents per $100.

    Tax on a $150,000 home will be $190.50.

    The city’s vehicle tax of 19.5 cents remains un-changed.

  • Chamber: Thankful for volunteers at Pride of the Counties

  • Board of Adjustments greenlights two bed and breakfast inns

    Two LaRue County couples received approval last week to open their houses as bed and breakfast inns.

    The LaRue County Board of Adjustments, headed by chair Paul Lassanske, voted to issue conditional use permits to Michael and Kaye Smith, and James and Kay Curle.

    The Smiths are planning a “farm stay” at their home on Tanner Road.

    Located in an out-of-the way area, it will give guests a hands-on experience of rural life.

  • City installing basketball court at Creek Front

    For the last two years during budget talks, Hodgenville Mayor Terry Cruse has mentioned adding a basketball court at Creekfront Park.

    Last week, construction began on a 50x70-foot court in front of the small log cabin in the lower area of the park. Hodgenville City Clerk MaDonna Hornback said two goals and benches would be added.

  • Election Calendar 2013

    Nov. 6, 2013 – Earliest date for candidates to file for an office on the ballot in 2014

    Dec. 31, 2013 – Last day to change political party affiliation and be eligible to vote in that party’s primary election

    Jan. 28, 2014 – Candidate filing deadline

    Jan. 30 – Public drawing for ballot position

    April 3 – Last day for county clerks to mail absentee ballots to voters who request them

    April 21 – Last day to register to vote for the primary

  • City accepts epayments for water bills

    The City of Hodgenville now offers the convenience of online payments for water bills.

    The link has been in development for a couple of months by the Kentucky League of Cities.

    Customers should go to www.hodgenville.ky.gov and click on the link at the left that says “online.”

    You’ll be asked to provide your account number (found on your water bill), your name, address and credit card number.

    MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express is accepted.

  • Guthrie to seek re-election

    U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie announced in July he will run for re-election in 2014 for Kentucky’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes LaRue County.

    The Bowling Green Republican was first elected in 2008, after former Congressman Ron Lewis retired.

    Guthrie also put to rest any rumors he might be eying the governor’s mansion in 2015.

    “I am not running for any state office in 2015, although I was humbled by the number of people who asked me to run for governor,” Guthrie said in his announcement.

  • Obamacare discussed at town hall meeting

    U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie held a town hall meeting Aug. 20 in the Lincoln Museum Community Room. Guthrie spent more than an hour answering questions from the audience of about 30 people.

    One of the first questions dealt with the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare,” the sweeping health reform act that goes into effect Oct. 1.
    Guthrie said the law is “unpopular, unworkable and it’s unraveling.”

    The employer mandate to offer workers coverage was delayed for a year because the Internal Revenue Service has not provided guidelines.

  • Redistricting bumps LaRue to the 24th district

    Last week, the General Assembly returned to the Capitol to re-draw the geographic lines that govern the 100-member House of Representatives and the 38-member Senate.

    It’s something we and every other state are called upon to do each decade, to reflect the differences in population found by the Census.
