  • BETA Club takes on district competition

     The BETA Club chapter at LaRue County High School attended the spring Third District BETA convention on March 15.

    Nineteen LaRue County students attended and competed in many different academic tests – quiz bowl, talent and arts and crafts competitions. LaRue County had an outstanding showing, being the first year that they have participated in this convention.

  • Fifth-grader wins essay contest

     Nicholas Vazquez, a fifth-grade student at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, was the LaRue County winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Elizabethtown-Hardin-LaRue Retired Teachers Association.

    The topic was: “Why My Grandparent Should be the AARP/KRTA Grandparent of the Year.” Nicholas read his winning essay at the March 15 meeting of EHLRTA.

    He wrote about his grandmother Wanda Howard.

    He received a medal and gift certificate to Barnes & Noble and became eligible to participate in the state finals.

  • Districts given power to raise dropout age

     On Monday, the General Assembly passed a law giving school boards the option to raise the dropout age for high school students.

    The Senate voted 33-5 in favor of Senate Bill 97, which allows school districts to raise the age from 16 to 18.  

    If more than 55 percent of school districts decide to do so, the policy becomes mandatory statewide. All other school districts would then have four years to implement the new policy.

  • Superintendent's salaries available online

     Education Commissioner Terry Holliday supports a recommendation by Auditor Adam Edelen to require superintendent contracts, benefits and annual evaluations be made available online after a series of school district special examinations found a lack of transparency and oversight.

  • LCMS Academic Team heads to state

     The LaRue County Middle School Quick Recall team led by captain Skyler Hornback placed second in Region 11 Competition on Feb. 2 and will compete this weekend at the State Governor’s Cup Academic Competition. Academic Coach Doris Jean Holleran said that this is the first Quick Recall team that has progressed to State Competition since she has been coaching the Academic Team.

    Hornback placed first in math and social studies; Cole Constant placed fourth in science written assessments. Hornback and Constant will compete in State Assessment Tests this weekend also.

  • Congressman sponsors art contest

     All high school students are encouraged to submit artwork for the Congressional Art Competition. The first place winner will receive two airplane tickets to fly to Washington, D.C. to view their artwork on display and attend a reception.

    All artwork and application materials must be sent to Congressman Brett Guthrie’s Bowling Green office by April 12. Faculty or students with questions can call the Congressman’s office at 270-842-9896 or visit http://guthrie.house.gov/congressional-art-competition.

  • Redding to accompany Habitat for Humanity group

     Western Kentucky University’s Habitat for Humanity campus chapter will be sending three volunteer groups to Arkansas, South Carolina and eastern Kentucky for spring break trips next week.

    Mary Redding, a campus minister from Howardstown, will travel with a group to Benton, Ark.
