  • Lisa Hawkins honored as ExCEL Teacher of the Year

    Lisa Hawkins, LaRue County’s ExCEL Teacher of the Year, was honored by her peers, past and present students and family Wednesday.
    ExCEL (Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership) is sponsored by WHAS11 and LG&E-KU. The award is presented to public school teachers in eight districts to recognize and reward the contributions of the teaching profession.

  • ALES takes fourth in Governor's Cup

    The Abraham Lincoln Elementary School team brought home the hardware at the Regional Governor's Cup competition March 23 at West Marion. Competing against 17 teams, ALES placed fourth overall and made school history as this has never been accomplished before.

    Sydney Pepper, a student at Hodgenville Elementary School, won the arts and humanities assessment. Her coach is Traci Weaver.

  • LCHS Speech Team qualifies more for Nationals

    LaRue County High School Speech and Debate spent the past weekend in Danville at the last in-state tournament of the 2012-13 season.

    Nine students competed in speech and debate events attempting to earn spots on the Kentucky entry to the National Forensic League National Championships to be held in Birmingham this June. Kentucky sends the best two students in each event to the National Tournament, and LCHS managed to snag three of the total 12 speech entries going to the tournament this year.

  • On Educating LaRue: Unbridled Learning shows college readiness

     If the statewide assessment system, Unbridled Learning, has a mantra, it is “college/career readiness‚” for all of Kentucky’s students.

    Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday emphasized the need for students‚ attaining the best education possible in order to be successful, whether they continue to college or further training, or enter directly into the work force.

  • ECTC celebrates love of words with Litfest

     Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is devoting an entire week to “LitFest! 2013: A Festival for the Love of Words.”

    Starting Monday, April 8, the college’s English Department, Fine Arts and Humanities Division and Multicultural Committee are celebrating words and literature with a variety of educational and entertaining events.

  • Pepper visits Guatemala on mission trip

     Nearly 50 Campbellsville University students, faculty and staff sacrificed spring break for ministry opportunities in Haiti, Florida, New York and Guatemala.

    The Guatemala mission team worked with Prince of Peace Orphanage for Girls. Lucas Pepper, a sophomore from Hodgenville, accompanied the group.

    Ed Pavy, director of campus ministries who went on the trip, said, “Prince of Peace is a place where the girls have been given hope for their future-how appropriate it is named for our Savior.”

  • Brown named to Bellarimine's dean's list

     Bellarmine University has named New Haven resident Mary Brown to the dean's list for fall 2012.

    Brown is a freshman majoring in biochemistry & molecular biology, and previously attended Nelson County High School.

    Bellarmine's dean's list recognizes students who receive a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale.
