  • LCHS Speech Team dominates competition

     The LaRue County High School Speech and Debate team continued their recent dominance of regional opponents this past Saturday at Kentucky Country Day School in Louisville. 

    The LCHS team racked up wins in seven of the 12 speaking events, with several others making the final rounds and bringing home trophies. 

    Senior Zach Thurman led off the day with a sixth-place finish in broadcast announcing and first-place wins in prose and storytelling.

  • Students graduate from University of the Cumberlands

      Three local students graduated Dec. 20 from the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg.

    Julia Akin of Hodgenville earned a MAT degree in special education.

    James Hines of Somerset graduated with a master’s degree in Christian studies.

    Tonya Gray of Buffalo graduated with a MAT degree in special education.

  • Chelf reflects on 17 years of accomplishment with the school board

      Ronnie Chelf, who lost his Second Division seat on the LaRue County Board of Education to Linda Pearman in last fall’s election, leaves the board with an attendance record that will be hard to top.

  • ON EDUCATING LARUE: Students may find permanent employment through school program

     This school year, 11 LaRue County High School students – six seniors and five juniors – are spending the last two periods of their school day exploring the field of work by actually receiving training at local worksites.

    They are participants in the Community Based Work Transition Program, designed for students with special needs to help them transition smoothly from classroom to the workplace.

     Denise Skaggs, instructional supervisor and former LaRue County Intermediate School principal, has been named interim principal at LaRue County Middle School, according to Superintendent Sam Sanders.

     When earth and the moon were very young, they were much closer together. The moon was so close, it took up a huge part of earth’s sky. When it hung overhead in the daytime, it cast such a shadow on the surface of earth that in many places it would have been almost like night.

  • LCMS teacher receives MAC grant

     Barbara Davila, a teacher at LaRue County Middle School, is the recipient of a $300 MAC Grant from McDonald’s Restaurants of Kentuckiana. 

    For the 10th consecutive year, Kentuckiana middle school teachers shared their ideas of how to “Make Activities Count” in the classroom in hopes of receiving one of McDonald’s MAC Grants. The grant program rewards teachers for innovation and creativity in the classroom by providing funding for hands-on learning activities.

  • Denise Skaggs named interim principal

     Denise Skaggs, instructional supervisor and former LaRue County Intermediate School principal, has been named interim principal at LaRue County Middle School, according to Superintendent Sam Sanders.

    She will welcome students back to school after winter break on Jan. 2.

    She takes over from Bob Bright, who resigned effective Dec. 31. Bright, who served as principal since 2010, has accepted a position as CEO/executive director of the National Beta Club. He and his wife, Kay, plan to move to Spartanburg, N.C.
