  • WKU forensics team takes 23rd consecutive state championship

     The Western Kentucky University Forensics team won its 23rd consecutive state championship Saturday.

    Ellis Fraser, a graduate of LaRue County High School, celebrated with his team as he finished fourth in after-dinner speaking, sixth in dramatic interpretation and sixth in poetry interpretation.

    Fraser is a sophomore from Hodgenville.

    This year’s tournament, hosted at Transylvania University, featured teams from all across the Commonwealth participating in speech and debate events.

  • ON EDUCATING LARUE: Schools soar in Explore scores

     Both LaRue County middle and high schools scored well on Explore and Plan assessments whose results were recently released.

    “We are very close to reaching our goal of being a consistent Top 10 percent, High Performing District,” said Sam Sanders, LaRue County Schools superintendent. “This was the second year in a row for stellar scores from LCMS on Explore.”

     The LaRue County School Board heard the following personnel recommendations Jan. 22 at its regular meeting.

    Recommendation of employment:

    • Orion Tucker as boys’ track coach at LaRue County High School

    • Laura Evans as extended student services tutor at Hodgenville Elementary School

    • Kay Maynor as substitute bus driver for the LaRue County Bus Garage

    • Anna Jo Pepper as Title III English as a second language tutor at HES

  • PHOTOS: Catching snowflakes

     Brandi Aubrey, Ayanna Humphrey and Ozariah Embree, students in Tracy Tharp’s kindergarten class at Hodgenville Elementary School, caught snowflakes on black paper to see that no two snowflakes are alike. They also caught a few with their tongues.

  • KET: Calling all young writers

     KET invites Kentucky's kindergarten through fifth grade students to submit their original, illustrated stories for the 2013 KET Young Writers Contest.

    KET will select winners at each grade level and award prizes. The first-place stories in each grade level will be published online on the KET website.

    Entries can be submitted now through April 13.

  • ECTC offers ACT classes

     Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will offer ACT prep courses in April. Individual classes are structured to give attention to each of the four subject areas – English, math, reading and science – or students may choose to take the ACT overview, offering custom-designed tutoring and practical advice on all four subjects.

    The ACT scores received on the exam can play an important role in admission to a college or university.

    Upcoming ACT preparation courses will be 5:30-8:30 p.m. on the following dates:
