    The ACT, which all Kentucky high school juniors are required to take, is important not only because it is a predictor of success in college, but also because the data gleaned from it can help strengthen students in academic areas while they’re still in high school.

  • Horticulture Club offers students first-hand learning

    Some students at Hodgenville Elementary School are learning botany and some biology firsthand as members of the school’s horticulture club.

    The students have a small garden outside adviser Ashley Puckett’s classroom where they have grown several types of vegetables – tomatoes, squash, zucchini, as well as several varieties of flowers including sunflowers.

    “I began leading the club last year,” Puckett said. “Becky Hawkins (a teaching colleague) led the club about three years before me.”

  • High school speech team coaching ‘Little Leagues’

    Just as successful high school varsity sports teams have feeder leagues supplying them with skilled and experienced new faces, so Katy Cecil, speech coach for both LaRue County high and middle schools, has begun a Little League complete with teams – Speakin’ Lincolns, Jabber Jawz and Awesome Os.

    “We started the program to educate the younger grades about what speech and debate actually is,” said Cecil who teaches English at LaRue County High School.

  • ‘Adopt-A-Backpacker’ helps fund expanding food program

    Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland has initiated a new pilot program called “Adopt-A-BackPacker” for the 2009-10 school year. The program is designed to help fund the ever-increasing cost and to allow for expanded participation in the BackPack Program.

  • Brewer earns bachelor’s degree

    Matthew Brewer of Hodgenville earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University.

    He was among 1,445 students who received degrees during graduation ceremonies Aug. 8 in Marion, Ind.

  • LaRue County working to make schools safer

    Making schools safer is an ongoing goal toward which LaRue County Schools strive.

    On Oct. 13, a team including several individuals from outside the school district will study the district’s emergency response plans, conduct visual walk-throughs at each school, examine supervision assignments and interview staff, students and parents as part of the assessment.

  • ALES honors staff members

    Abraham Lincoln Elementary School concluded its first month of school with the selection of two employees for the Lincoln Presidential Cabinet Awards. The award is given monthly to one classified and one certified person through a nomination process from ALES colleagues. Recipients must demonstrate a positive attitude with students and staff, a “whatever it takes” attitude, a good relationship with families, a desire to grow professionally, and evidence of service beyond the call of duty.

  • ‘Drink It and Sink It’ recycling program comes to district

    Conservation of resources and improving our environment, commonly referred to as “going green,” make sense not only from a financial viewpoint, but also from a safety and health perspective.

    LaRue County Nutrition Services has made several strong efforts in the last couple of years to work toward becoming “green,” according to Nutrition Services Coordinator DeeAnne Sanders.

  • Cell phones restricted at school

    During the school day, the use of cell phones by students will be prohibited, except in the case of emergencies.

    The LaRue County School Board gave first reading Monday to a board policy that affirms the rules in place at LaRue County High School and LaRue County Middle School. If approved on second reading, the policy would be adopted as the districtwide requirement.

    The change in the telecommunications device policy (09.4261) strikes the use of cell phones during students’ lunch breaks.

  • ALES students begin microsociety jobs

    Twenty third, fourth, and fifth graders from Abraham Lincoln Elementary School became a part of the latest student microsociety workforce by completing an intense one-day summer workshop in the school library. Students learned how to complete a job application, interviews, job evaluations, and then got on the job experience in four different job areas - safety patrol, flag duty, flower caretenders and the recycle brigade.
