  • LCMS shows improved test scores

    LaRue County Middle School Principal Corey Keith presented his school’s Proficiency Report at the Nov. 16 school board meeting.

    Keith commended his “hard-working and committed” staff and thanked the board and the site-based decision-making council for its support of the school.

    LCMS was one of only three out of 17 area middle schools to reach all NCLB targets. Out of 175 school districts in Kentucky, LCMS ranked 62nd in middle school reading and 45th in middle school math.

  • LCHS Speech Team wins top honors

    Over the past two weeks, the LaRue County High School speech team has competed in four invitational tournaments and won several individual and team awards, including four first place finishes and a small schools championship.

  • Fifth Grade Coffee House

    Remember the era of coffee house poetry? Finger-snapping and cappuccino reminiscent of days gone by? Fast forward to 2009 at ALES and the art is alive and well as fifth graders and their families shared some of their own poems or read a favorite piece. First to be shared was a free verse poem written by Karlotta Cecil’s 2008-09 class about Lincoln. The original poem, along with other classroom writings, was sent last year with other Lincoln memorabilia as ALES participated in the Lincoln Time Capsule burial in honor of the 16th President’s 200th birthday.

  • High school juniors hear from freshman Congressman

    U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie spoke to the LaRue County High School Leadership students Monday morning.

    Eleven of the 16 juniors in the group were present to hear the congressman’s views on the economy, the war on terrorism, education, the environment and leadership.

  • Memorial fund needs help to help students

    Nowhere is the true spirit of Christmas more prevalent than through the Kelly Dean Sanders Memorial Fund.

    Thanks to the generosity of LaRue Countians since the fund’s inception in the late 1960s, thousands of LaRue County students who needed help have been able to receive it.

    The major moneymaker to keep the fund active is the Kelly Dean Sanders Memorial Dinner which will be held at the LaRue County Middle School cafeteria noon-2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

  • Laptop initiative will open doors for learning

    LaRue County Schools are considering taking a giant step forward in technology that could equip all their high school students with never-before opportunities for learning.

    The program, which students will name, will put the use of a laptop computer into the hands of each LaRue County High School student. 

    “I feel the laptop initiative has the potential to enhance learning and better prepare our students for college and/or the work force,” said Sam Sanders, LaRue County Schools superintendent.

    The following personnel recommendations were accepted by the LaRue County School Board Nov. 16.

    •Extended employment of Traci Weaver as academic coach at Hodgenville Elementary School effective Oct. 26.

    •Employment of Barry Bell as substitute custodian effective Oct. 26.

    •Ronald Brown as substitute bus monitor effective Nov. 4.

  • LaRue grad melds chorus talents

    LaRue County High School alumnus Steve Skaggs directed the Fourth District Treble Chorus, 200 students from the 11-county district who performed at Meade County High School auditorium Sept. 26.

    Skaggs, who like his wife, Shirley, is a 1971 LCHS graduate, called his first experience as the director an honor.
