    WKU admissions visit

  • Teacher receives National Board for Professional Standards certification

    Foster Heights teacher and Magnolia resident Nancy Kessler Lane recently earned her certification from the National Board for Professional Standards, joining an elite club whose membership includes only two other teachers in the Nelson County School District.

    Earning a National Board Certification is a rigorous task, according to education professionals. Resource teacher Patrice Edelen, who has also earned her certification and works at Foster Heights, said it involves submitting work portfolios, taking a battery of tests and creating a filmed video critique.

  • Academic Team competes in district

    The LaRue County High School Academic Team competed in the 18th District Governor’s Cup Competition Feb. 1 and 3 at Bardstown High School. Students competed in the areas of future problem solving, written assessment, composition and quick recall. 

    The following received awards in written assessment: Andrew Skaggs, third in mathematics; Spenser Reed, first in social studies; Shelby Rogers, fourth in language arts; and Ellis Fraser, fourth in arts and humanities. Haley Edwards placed second in composition.

    Tips for college-bound students

    Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after Jan. 1. The FAFSA is used to apply for state and federal student aid. File online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.   • ALES students celebrate reading goals

    Students at Abraham Lincoln Elementary celebrated their reading goals for the past grading quarter with a ‘50’s Sock Hop. In order to attend, students had to meet the Principal’s Challenge Goal criteria of doubling their reading points and maintaining an 85 percent comprehension within their individual reading level. DJ Michael Sietsema provided the tunes as about 165 students joined in the fun. Door prizes were given and refreshments were served.

    Plans are under way to meet the third quarter Principal’s Challenge with a magic show.

  • New year brings a new outlook on opportunities

    In addition to setting weight loss and smoking cessation goals, the start of another year offers a great opportunity to consider bettering other aspects of one’s life as well.

    “It’s a wonderful time to think about improving one’s education and life possibilities,” said Sarah Hornback, director of family services for LaRue County Schools.

    So far this school year, LaRue’s adult education program has served 154 students with 10 receiving General Education Development (GED) diplomas.

  • Civil Engineering scholarship available

    The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will award up to 10 new scholarships for students to pursue civil engineering technology degrees at two schools – Bluegrass Community & Technical College in Lexington and Big Sandy Community & Technical College in Prestonsburg. The new Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program will prepare students for work with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet upon graduation.

  • Grads announced at Campbellsville

    Campbellsville University awarded 139 degrees in its third December commencement.

    Local graduates include:

    •Britt Marie Sherrard, bachelor of science in early childhood education, of Hodgenville. She is a graduate of Jeffersontown High School and a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in Elizabethtown. She is the daughter of Larry and Judith Kessinger of Elizabethtown and has one child, Wyatt Hunter Sherrard.

  • Underwood, Brown named to ALES Presidential Cabinet

    Two Abraham Lincoln Elementary School employees have been named to the Lincoln Presidential Cabinet.

    Carol Underwood represented the certified staff and Bonnie Brown was chosen as the classified staff winner.

    Underwood has worked at ALES and Magnolia Elementary since 2001 as an exceptional education teacher. Prior to her school employment, she was employed in Taylor County at one of the local industries and when the company closed, she took advantage of the offer to return to college to obtain her teaching degree.
