    Angelina Suzann McCoy graduated from Georgetown College May 15.

    McCoy, daughter of Wilbern and Suzann McCoy of Hodgenville, was one of 242 graduates to receive a bachelor’s degree during commencement exercises.

  • Campbellsville University announces honors list

    Campbellsville University has announced the academic honors’ list for the spring 2010 semester.

    The list includes 160 achieving a 4.0 grade point average and having been named to the President’s List.

    Local students include Terry Lee Caven of Magnolia, junior; Carmen Danielle Drake of Sonora, senior; Aaron Marcus LaFollette of Hodgenville, senior; and Kayla Renee McDowell of Magnolia, senior.

  • Students learn financial prudence at Reality Store

    Students participating in the Reality Store at LaRue County Middle School’s gym seemed to be more careful with their money than in previous years, according to Sue Ann McCandless, staff assistant with the University of Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension Service that co-sponsors the day-long event with LaRue School’s Youth Service Center.

    Woman’s Club

    The Hodgenville Woman’s Club will award a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior attending school in LaRue County or an adult residing in LaRue County who plans to enroll or is enrolled in college or technical school for fall semester 2010. Applications are available at the LaRue County High School guidance counselor’s office, the Lincoln Museum in Hodgenville or by contacting Faye Puyear, Woman’s Club scholarship chairman, at 358-4749. Deadline is April 15.

  • ALES receives TIP grant

    Second graders at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School recently experienced a week-long residency constructing their own pop-up book with Kentucky Arts Council artist Jane McTeigue.

    Each book had four-page spreads highlighting the “top spots” in LaRue County, ways in which the children could be responsible community members and persons of interest in the community. The two Lincoln statues in downtown Hodgenville also were featured.

  • Working as legislative page an eye-opening experience

    For one day, Feb. 25, Leah Carter was able to see Kentucky government up close and personal as a daily legislative page.

    “One of my favorite experiences was sitting in Senator (Carroll) Gibson’s chair during the meeting,” recalled Carter, a straight-A junior at LaRue County High School. ”I know it sounds odd, but I was surrounded by 50 or so senators and it was like I was just as important as they were. I was the only page that got to sit down, so I felt special.”

    Twenty-four classroom winners competed Friday at Abraham Lincoln Elementary for advancement to the upcoming annual North Central Kentucky Spelling Bee April 23 at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.

  • Woman’s Club offering scholarship

    The Hodgenville Woman’s Club will award a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior attending school in LaRue County or an adult residing in LaRue County who plans to enroll or is enrolled in college or technical school for fall semester 2010. Applicants will be considered on the basis of grade point average, financial need, community and school involvement and completion of a short essay describing career goals and need.

  • Magnolia Bank awards scholarships

    Twenty sixth-grade students from Hardin and LaRue counties have been awarded the third annual Magnolia Bank Preparing for Success scholarships. Students were asked to write an essay telling what would make a great career and how they plan to pursue that career. 

    ‘“The goal of this program is to get kids and their families talking about college early. We want to help students in our area get off to a good start saving for their future,’“ said Stefanie Rock, assistant vice president at Magnolia Bank.
