     Last week, three members of the LaRue County Board of Education shared their views of the greatest challenges facing the board and school system today and the goals they envision attaining during their terms in office.

     Lisa Hawkins, the 2013 LaRue County ExCEL Award winner, was surprised, humbled and honored at being named this year’s recipient.

  • Student researches old Georgetown Schoolhouse

     Sheridan Myers, a senior at LaRue County High School, researched local history for an assignment in her creative writing class. She interviewed members of the community, including her great-grandmother, Maxine Powell, before writing “The Old Georgetown Schoolhouse” for the Talk of the Hawk, the school’s newspaper.

     National Board for Professional Teaching Standards’ certified teachers are recognized as among the best in their profession. 

  • Srygler named to Dean's List at Clear Creek

     Adam D. Srygler of Hodgenville has been named to the Dean’s List at Clear Creek Baptist College, Pineville.

    Inclusion to the Dean’s List means he has achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher for the fall semester.

    Srygler is the spouse of Janice Weston Srygler and the son of John Srygler of Hodgenville and the late Lesa Srygler.

  • Herrin nominated for journalism conference

     Kaelyn Herrin, a student at LaRue County High School, has been nominated to represent Kentucky as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2013 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University.

  • MONEY TIP: Know your paystub

     Understanding pay stubs

    When you work, your employer will give you a pay stub when you get paid, even if you use direct deposit. Understanding the information on the pay stub is vital to managing your money and budgeting, according to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.

    Each company’s pay stub is different, but all employers must include these items:

    · Gross Pay: This is what you earned that pay period before any taxes or benefits, such as insurance, were withheld.

  • Fraser takes third in dramatic interpretation

     Western Kentucky University forensic team members traveled to Murray and Ypsilanti, Mich., to take part in four tournaments the weekend of Feb. 2-3.

    Ellis Fraser, a sophomore from Hodgenville, competed at Eastern Michigan University. WKU’s team won the team sweepstakes championship.

    Fraser was third in dramatic interpretation and sixth in poetry interpretation; fourth in dramatic interpretation and fifth in impromptu speaking. He advanced to finals.

  • Four named to Eastern's Dean's List

     Four local students were named to the Dean’s List at Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, for the fall semester.

    They are Sean-Micheal Wathen, of Magnolia, a sophomore aviation major; Adam Blake Cox, of Campbellsville, a senior police studies major; Russell Taylor Despain, of Campbellsville, a senior aviation major; and Maridith Ann Willett, of Campbellsville, a junior pre-occupational science major.

  • Campbellsville University students attend inauguration

     January will mark a month that many Campbellsville University students will remember for a long time. Three groups of students attended President Barack Obama's second inauguration ceremony.

    Students attending were from three university clubs: Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, the Sociology Club and the Political Science Club.

    Attending were Kaity Skaggs of New Haven; Sarah Mortensen of Hodgenville; and Shelby Floyd of Upton.
