  • Captured fugitive faces meth charges

    A Hart County man, who has eluded police for almost a year, was apprehended Sunday at a residence on Upton Talley Road.
    Spurgeon Napper III, 39, was sitting in a SUV beside Magnolia Elementary School last May and drove away when an officer questioned him. He led officers on a high-speed chase through the Wonderland section, eventually fleeing on foot when his vehicle bogged down in a muddy area.

  • Mother of deceased inmate files federal suit against jail

    The mother of a former LaRue County Detention Center inmate who died while in custody has filed a federal lawsuit against the Detention Center, individual county employees and the nurse who was treating her daughter.
    Named in the suit are Southern Health Partners, the company responsible for providing medical care to inmates; LaRue County; LaRue County Detention Center; former jailer Ralph “Mac” Trumbo; Brandi Howson, a licensed practical nurse; John Adams II, M.D., a doctor who treated inmates; and deputy jailer Marie Flewwellin.

  • Boy Lincoln Statue struck by car; sculptor to assess damage

    The Boy Lincoln Statue, not yet 3-years-old, and the century-old seated Lincoln statue were damaged early Sunday when an alleged drunken driver tore through Hodgenville’s Lincoln Square traffic island.
    Boy Lincoln, a depiction of Abraham Lincoln at age 7 standing with his dog Honey, was dedicated to the city in May 2008 as part of the Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration. The small bronze sculpture was knocked from its base by a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Jeremy Scott Veatch, 23, of Austin.

  • Female inmates file civil suit against jailer and employees

    Five women who allegedly suffered rape and abuse at the hands of two former LaRue County deputy jailers, filed a civil suit Monday in LaRue Circuit Court.
    Alleasha Knox Butler, Brandi Dennis, Stephanie Mason, Jennifer Nichols and Betty Cox were former inmates at the jail, according to the suit filed by Elizabethtown attorney Ronald Hines.
    The women claim they were “mistreated, harassed, assaulted, forcibly raped and forced to perform sexual acts” while incarcerated.

  • Boy Lincoln Statue slammed by alleged drunken driver

    Police say a Barren County man drove a Ford Taurus through the center of Hodgenville’s Lincoln Square early Sunday, striking both statues of Abraham Lincoln.

    The Boy Lincoln Statue, dedicated in May 2008 as part of the Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration, was knocked from its base and dragged as the car entered the traffic island from U.S. 31-E (East Main Street). The base was dented and the statue, which depicted Lincoln as a child standing with his dog Honey, was severely scratched and scraped.

  • Three sentenced in Nelson Circuit Court

    The following people were sentenced recently in Nelson Circuit Court. All had previously entered a plea of guilty or had been found guilty during a criminal trial. Unless otherwise stated, all jail sentences are served concurrently.

  • Man sentenced to five years for manufacturing meth

    A reported knife fight last June led officers to a meth lab in Mount Sherman. Four people were eventually charged in the incident, pleading guilty to various counts.
    Jason Lee Kitzero, 32, formerly of Bonnieville, will spend five years in prison after pleading guilty to facilitation, manufacturing methamphetamine; three counts of complicity, possession of controlled substance (meth) and complicity, use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

  • Man faces charges after shooting inside home

    A Hodgenville man was admitted to Hardin Memorial Hospital for evaluation Friday after firing shots inside his residence. He faces criminal charges as well.
    Clifford Horn, 48, of Kirkpatrick Avenue, called 911 several times that day, beginning before 5 a.m., according to Acting Police Chief Steve Johnson.
    In the first call, Horn claimed there were “10 guys behind the house and eight people in front of the house” and they had “killed a bobcat-looking animal.”

  • Man sentenced to six years for manufacturing meth

    A traffic stop last June has resulted in one man being sentenced to six years and another ordered to stay out of the county.
    LaRue County Deputy Russell McCoy said the driver, William Howard Thompson, 54, of Loretto was driving erratically that day when he pulled him over.
    A search of the vehicle turned up drugs and a firearm.
    Thompson and his passenger, Jason R. Davis, 33, of Magnolia, implicated each other in the discovery.
