• Jobless rate decreases in LaRue

    Unemployment rates decreased in 72 Kentucky counties between July 2012 and July 2013, while 42 county rates rose and six stayed the same, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.  

    LaRue County’s rate was down from 8.1 percent to 7.6 percent.

    Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth at 5.8 percent. It was followed by Fayette County, 6.4 percent; Oldham County, 6.5 percent; and Scott County, 6.6 percent.

  • Sims retires after 17 years

    Linda Sims, director of the Lincoln Trail Health Department, announced her pending retirement on Sept. 10 during a Board of Health meeting in Hodgenville.

    Her last day with LTHD was Sept. 30. She served the district 17 years.

    Sims said she has enjoyed working with each community, being able to help bring many needed services to members in LaRue, Hardin, Meade, Marion, Nelson and Washington counties.

    Sims got her start with LTHD in 1996 after replying to an ad for a director.

  • Sherrie’s Barber Shop celebrates 30 years

    Now in her 30th year of running a small town barber shop, Sherrie Vittitow said the time has “truly flown by.”

    Vittitow grew up in Louisville but made the small community of Magnolia her home in 1983. Randy and Shirley Johnson, Vittitow’s parents, made the move from Louisville to Magnolia earlier that year.

    She became interested in being a beautician in her teens, and constantly sought chances to cut and style hair.

    The Hosparus Thrift Shoppe has moved to a new location that tripled its size from 3,000 to 9,000 square feet. The new site remains at the Helmwood Plaza in Elizabethtown (next to Sun Tan City).

    Janet Karnes has been selected as the September Employee of the Month for Nationwide Uniform.

    She has been employed with Nationwide since January 2002 and is under the supervision of Nellie Gaskin in the trouser department.

    She will receive a special award for her dedication and service.

  • Old Sunrise to sell

    After two years of sitting vacant, the old Sunrise Manor Nursing Home will be sold.

    According to Rondal Wright, chairman of LaRue County Geriatric Center Board of Directors, the Phillips Lane facility will be auctioned Saturday, Nov. 16.

    Jimmie Lee of Lee Realty in Magnolia has been hired to dispose of the real estate and remainder of furniture. The sale will begin at 10 a.m. It will be an absolute auction.
