 Twenty sixth-grade students from LaRue and Hardin Counties were awarded the sixth annual Magnolia Bank “Preparing for Success” scholarships.

Students were asked to write an essay telling what would make a great career, and how they plan to pursue that career. 

“The goal of this program is to get kids and their families talking about college early.  We want to help students in our area get off to a good start saving for their future,” said Stefanie Rock, vice president at Magnolia Bank.   

 Three people won door prizes from The LaRue County Herald News’ booth at the Extension Expo. Above, Emogene Gardner was the winner of a one-year subscription to The LaRue County Herald News. Sarah Hornback and Kay Whitlock each received a $10 discount on a subscription.

 Unemployment rates fell in 83 Kentucky counties between January 2012 and January 2013, while 33 county rates increased and four stayed the same, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

LaRue County’s rate was 8.3 percent. Of 6,896 potential workers, 573 were unemployed.

LaRue’s rate in December was 7.6 percent.
