  • 4-H Calendar: Updated 06/21

    Kentucky Youth Seminar
    The Kentucky Youth Seminar will be held June 22-24 in Lexington. Local eligible participants will be attending.
     
    Lice check for 4-H Camp
    The mandatory 4-H Camp head lice check will take place 4-5:30 p.m. June 27 at the Extension Office. Bring all medication that will be taken to camp at this time. Girls will need to pay the $2.00 craft fee and t-shits will be distributed.

  • Controlling insects in stored wheat

    Prior to harvest take the following steps: Clean all equipment and storage bins thoroughly to remove old grain, trash and debris that might contaminate the new crop. Remove spilled grain around pits/hoppers and storage bins to prevent contamination. Treat bin walls and flooring with an approved residual insecticide such as Tempo and Reldan. Treat the outside base of all bins with an approved residual insecticide. Mow, spray or remove weeds/grass/vegetation around storage bins.

  • FFA members excel at State FFA Convention

    The Kentucky Association of FFA held its 82th Annual State Convention on June 7-9 at Rupp Arena in Lexington. Twenty-one members of the LaRue County FFA chapter attended the State FFA Convention this year, but several others were recognized for their previous accomplishments.
    During convention members participated in a number of activities and excelled.
    Lydia Richardson was selected as the state runner-up in the Soybean Association YouTube Video Contest receiving $2,000 for her and $2,000 for the FFA Chapter.

  • Aaron Wheeler wins second State FFA Award

    Aaron Thomas Shawler Wheeler, a 2010 graduate of LaRue County High School and member of the LaRue County FFA Chapter, was named the State FFA Outdoor Recreation-Entrepreneurship/Placement Proficiency award winner and received a $250 check at the State FFA convention. He will advance to compete for national honors.
    Each state winner will be judged at the national contest and rated gold, silver or bronze. Four national finalists will be chosen with each receiving a $500 award and plaque.

  • FSA county committee nominations begin today

    The nomination period for local Farm Service Agency county committees begins June 15.
    To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate.

  • Prevented planting report should be submitted July 15

    Due to Kentucky’s weather creating delays in planting, the Kentucky Farm Service Agency is extending the 2011 date to report prevented planting for all crops except small grains to July 15, to coincide with the crop reporting deadline. Normally, producers are required to file this notification on prevented planting with their FSA office within 15 days of the respective crop’s final planting date.

  • Guide to invasive plants offered through USDA Forest Southern Research Station

    The USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station is distributing free copies of a new guide, titled “A Management Guide for Invasive Plants in Southern Forests,” that gives homeowners, gardeners, land managers and others information on controlling and removing invasive plants in the South.

  • FSA program deadlines loom

    July 15 - Final date to report acreage on all other crops and land uses, except small grains, including CRP acreage. Production reporting deadline for NAP crops for previous year’s production except small grains. Exception: Crops insured through NAP must report the earlier of: 15 calendar days before the onset of harvest or grazing, or July 15.
     July 29 - Final date to apply for 2009 Supplement Revenue Assistance Program (SURE).

    Pork Producers meet
    The LaRue County Pork Association will meet 7 p.m. June 20 at the LaRue County Extension Office in Hodgenville. A meal will be served. All interested individuals are invited to attend.
    ACRE deadline
    extended to Sept. 1
    The 2010 Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) production certification deadline has been extended to Sept. 1.
