  • 4-H Talent Show and poster contest deadlines approaching

     The 4-H Talent Show will be held 6:30 p.m. March 22 at the LaRue County High School auditorium. Pre-register by March 18 by calling the Extension office at 358-3401 or stop by to pick up a registration form. 

    The talent show is open to all LaRue County youth ages 9 to 18. A variety of categories are offered including vocal, instrumental, physical skills and theatrical. A group act category is also offered for acts with five or more participants. Other acts may have from one to four participants.

  • Farm Bureau celebrates Food Check-Out Week

     The cost of food in America remains affordable. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, American consumers spend, on average, just over 10 percent of their disposable income for food. That means the average household will have earned enough disposable income – that portion of income available for spending or saving – to pay for its annual food supply in about seven weeks, said Kentucky Farm Bureau president Mark Haney.

  • Unique tournament targets invasive carp

     Kentucky will unleash a full-court press against invasive carp during a tournament being held in March.

    The Carp Madness Tournament will get teams of commercial anglers competing in a contest to corral the growing population of Asian carp in two of the state’s largest and most popular fishing lakes. Five teams that bring back the highest poundage of fish will split $20,000, with the top prize being $10,000.

  • Spring forest fire season began Feb. 15

     Kentucky law designates Feb. 15 through April 30 as spring forest fire hazard season. During this time, it is illegal to burn anything within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland between the daylight hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

    The law is intended to prevent forest fires by allowing outdoor burning only after 6 p.m. when conditions are less likely to cause a wildfire to spread.

  • State considers extending rabbit hunting season

     The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is seeking input from the public on a proposal to lengthen the next rabbit hunting season.

    Department officials have received a request to create one statewide rabbit season starting Nov. 1 and closing Feb. 10. Currently, rabbit season in the eastern rabbit hunting zone of the state is slated to open Nov. 1, 2013, and close Jan. 31, 2014.

    In the western rabbit hunting zone, the season is scheduled to open Nov. 11, 2013 and continue until Feb. 10, 2014.

  • Abe and agriculture

    Native son Abraham Lincoln’s 204th birthday is celebrated this week. Born on a farm here in LaRue County, Lincoln had a significant impact on LaRue County and American agriculture. 

    Raised on farms in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois, young Lincoln obviously did the farm chores of feeding livestock, planting seeds and weeding that all pioneer farm boys did. Even his famous rail-splitting abilities were related to clearing the land for farming.
