  • Orange card exemption available for youth hunters

    Hunters required to complete a hunter education course to legally be in the field, but who haven’t had time to get their orange card, don’t have to miss Kentucky’s spring turkey season which ends May 8.
    Kentucky’s hunter apprentice opportunity - the Temporary Hunter Education Exemption Permit - allows a person otherwise required to carry a course completion card to use the one-time, one-year exemption instead. Hunter education is mandatory when a hunter turns 13 years old, and includes those born on or after Jan. 1, 1975.  

  • Woodrich named Kentucky’s State Conservationist

    Karen Woodrich has been named Kentucky’s USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service State Conservationist.
    Woodrich comes to Kentucky from Champaign, Ill., where she served as the Assistant State Conservationist for Operations.
    She has also served as acting state conservationist in Vermont and an area conservationist covering 23 counties in Iowa.

    Register now for 4-H Camp
    4-H Camp will be June 28-July 1 at the Lake Cumberland 4-H Camp. Applications are available from the Extension Office or http://ces.ca.uky.edu/larue/summercamp. It is open to LaRue County youth ages 9-14 and in grades 3-8.
    Cost for campers is $165. An $85 deposit will hold the child’s spot until May 20 when full payment is due. Scholarship applications are available for those with financial need. Space is limited for campers and adult and teen leaders. For more information, call 358-3401.

    Cash hay sales can be an income source for the farmer who is willing to provide good management and to work at quality hay production and marketing. Several LaRue County farmers are already involved in hay production and marketing. Let’s briefly discuss some management tips that can help generate the most profit from this enterprise.

  • Insect traps going up across Kentucky

    As tourists and Kentucky residents travel across the state this spring and summer, they may see unfamiliar objects in the trees. These are not debris but rather traps for two potentially devastating tree insect pests—the emerald ash borer and the gypsy moth.

    “These traps do not contain anything toxic and are not going to cause infestations to develop," Townsend said. "They are designed to find insects that are already there." 

  • Campbellsville's Clay Hill Forest to sell plants

    In celebration of Earth Day, Campbellsville University's Clay Hill Memorial Forest will have a native plant sale 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. April 22.

    All proceeds from the sale will be used to support student research at Clay Hill Memorial Forest.

    A list of available plants can be viewed on the Clay Hill website at www.clayhillforest.org.

    Clay Hill Memorial Forest is located about eight miles from Campbellsville at 7426 Old Lebanon Road, about one mile north of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

  • Wildflower Weekend: A nature lovers retreat

    The Kentucky Native Plant Society’s Wildflower Weekend, April 29-May 1, is a chance for botanists, gardeners and nature lovers to enjoy the hundreds of species of native plants at Natural Bridge State Resort Park.
    The Kentucky Native Plant Society will be celebrating its 25th anniversary at the event. Field trips and walks will be offered at 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday; 8:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday; and at 9 a.m. on Sunday. All field trips leave from the Hemlock Lodge lobby.
