  • Extension memories wanted

     Submit an Extension memory and get a chance to win $100.

    This year the national Cooperative Extension Service is celebrating its 100th year anniversary. If you have a favorite memory or story from some Extension-related experience such as Ag, Homemakers or 4-H, share it with the LaRue County Extension Office (270-358-3401). All who submit a memory will be eligible for a $100 prize which will be drawn on March 15 at the Extension Expo. Memories can be dropped off at the Extension office, 807 Old Elizabethtown Road, or emailed to marcy.ward@uky.edu.

  • COLUMN: Consider several factors in grazing livestock

      Grazing represents the cheapest way to feed cattle and other ruminants on a cost per pound of nutrient basis. Let’s review briefly some considerations of a defined grazing program. 

  • Food Check Out Week: Feb. 16-22

     Kentucky Farm Bureau leaders across the state are celebrating national “Food Check-Out Week,” Feb. 16-22, to mark the time of year when the average American has earned enough income to meet his or her annual cost of food.

  • Daniel Carpenter hired as agriculture specialist

    Daniel Carpenter has been selected as an agriculture specialist with Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, specifically serving the agriculture communities of LaRue and Hart counties.

    A Springfield native, Carpenter is a 2007 graduate from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in plant and soil science, and is also a certified crop adviser. He has spent the last six years in the agriculture retail industry.

    Pork producers meet
    The LaRue County Pork Association will meet 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at the LaRue County Extension office in Hodgenville. All interested individuals are invited to attend.

    Farmers market planning
    A meeting to discuss a LaRue County farmers market, or ag market days will be 1:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the LaRue County Extension office. Previous and potential vendors of the farmers market or last year’s ag market day are encouraged to attend the meeting.

  • COLUMN: Managing the calving season

     Providing sound management during the calving season (especially in years like this one) can mean more live calves and more profit. Some reminders on what a producer can do to limit calf loss include:

    Separate first-calf heifers from mature cows. Calving difficulty can run as high as 30 to 40 percent for 2-year-old heifers compared to just 3 percent for mature cows. Place them in a small, accessible pasture near a corral where assistance can be given if needed.

    The 4-H Poultry Club will meet 3:30-5 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Extension office.

     

    Cooking Club

    The 4-H Rabbit Club will meet 3:30-5 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Extension office.

     

    Parent’s Night Out

    The 4-H Rabbit Club will host a Parent’s Night Out 6-10 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Extension office. Space is limited. Call 270-358-3401 to register. Cost is $15 for one child and $8 for each additional sibling.

     

  • THE RURAL BLOG: Men charged with stealing seed

     One of six Chinese nationals accused of traveling across the Midwest to steal trade secrets from U.S. seed manufacturers entered not-guilty pleas Monday in federal court in Des Moines, and a trial date was set for March 31, David Pitt reports for The Associated Press. Four of the other five are in China, which doesn't share an extradition agreement with the United States, and the fifth is in Canada. U.S. Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt told Pitt that "all avenues are being considered to find and arrest" him.

  • Ashley Hornback joins Angus Association

     Ashley Hornback, Magnolia, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association.

    Junior members of the Association are eligible to register cattle in the American Angus Association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in Association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

    The American Angus Association is the largest beef breed association in the world, with over 24,000 active adult and junior members.
