  • COLUMN: Interested in becoming a master gardener?

     The Kentucky Master Gardener program helps train those who are interested in learning more about the science behind gardening and sharing that knowledge back in their communities. Persons enrolled in this program are trained by Extension horticulture agents in the area.

    The Hardin County horticulture agent, Amy Aldenderfer, is offering an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7.

    Farm Service Agency nominations

    The nomination period for local Farm Service Agency county committees is ongoing. To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate. To become a candidate, an eligible individual must sign the nomination form, FSA-669A.  The form is available at http://www.fsa.usda.gov/elections.

  • 4-H Calendar - July 2012

    Day Camp

    A 4-H Day Camp will be held 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. July 25 at the LaRue County Extension Office. Participants will make several projects that can be entered in the LaRue County Fair, including a basket and a birdhouse. The cost is $5 and includes lunch. Participants will also make brownies which they can make again at home to enter in the fair on July 30. This day camp is open to youth ages 9 to 12. Call the Extension Office at 358-3401 to sign your child up to participate.

     Jerry McClure, left, and his son, Austin Blake McClure, grew these large “Mr. Stripey” heirloom tomatoes in their Tonieville garden. Jerry McClure said they weigh about two pounds each. He raises also “Mortgage Lifters” and beefstake tomatoes, “thousands of cherry tomatoes” and watermelons. He pumps about 700 gallons of water from a nearby creek to his garden every other day.

  • STEVE LARUE: NOTES FROM GROUNDHOG HILL

    Zinnias are nearing their peak at Groundhog Hill this week: So many unexpected and vibrant colors. Usually, I mostly end up with purple.

    I grow zinnias for several reasons: They’re pretty, fairly drought-resistant and they’re fun to give away to people you really like. Also, zinnias remind me of my mother, Frances Bond Enlow LaRue.

  • Charlie Williams named Tree Farmer of the Year

     The American Tree Farm System has named Charlie Williams of Munfordville  as Central Regional Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year. STIHL is the presenting sponsor of the Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year awards, which annually recognizes outstanding sustainable forest management on privately owned woodlands.

    The award of a $500 Gift Certificate from STIHL was presented on June 15 at the 19th Annual National Tree Farmer Convention in Jacksonville, Fla.

  • 4-Hers may enter unlimited items at County Fair

    The LaRue County Fair is an excellent opportunity for youth to showcase their talents. Numerous 4-H classes are offered. Categories include arts and crafts, photography, foods, houseplants, vegetables, crops, electric, woodworking, entomology, honey, forestry, geology, sewing, knitting, crocheting, breads, dairy foods, food preservation and home environment. 

    A complete list of 4-H classes is included in the Fair catalog. Stop by the Extension Office if you need a copy of the catalog or if you have questions about entry requirements. 

  • COLUMN: Be safe when canning tomatoes

     Tomatoes have traditionally been canned in a boiling water bath. To ensure the safety of whole, crushed or juiced tomatoes; USDA recommends adding acid, whether they will be processed in a boiling water bath or pressure canner.
