  • Veteran teacher and school manager retires after 35 years

    After 35 years in the educational field, veteran teacher and school manager Kathy Ross retired in July.
    Ross, who spent 30 years as a classroom teacher at Magnolia and the last five years as school administrative manager at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, taught all grades during her career except kindergarten and fifth.
    The county’s first ExCEL (Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership) recipient, one of her most memorable moments was when ALES became the model school for the state’s School Manager Program.

    Support 4-H at the LaRue County Fair
    Support 4-H at the LaRue County Fair by purchasing a bag of cotton candy for $2.  The booth is located across from the entrance to the grand stand and will be open each evening during the fair.
     
    4-H exhibits on display at the fair in the Floral Hall
    Stop by the Floral Hall at the fairgrounds to view the 4-H exhibits on display Wednesday through Friday evening.  Exhibits must be picked up between 10 a.m. and noon July 30.

    FSA nominations
    The nomination period for local Farm Service Agency county committees ends Aug. 1. To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate. To become a candidate, an eligible individual must sign the nomination form, FSA-669A. For more information, visit http://www.fsa.usda.gov/elections or call the Hardin/LaRue FSA office at 765-2702.

  • Verification required for payment

    Kentucky USDA Farm Service Agency State Executive Director John W. McCauley, reminds producers that, in order to receive USDA program payments, each payment recipient must have an Adjusted Gross Income verification consent form on file with the Internal Revenue Service.
    The consent form authorizes IRS to verify for FSA whether a payment recipient’s AGI meets the eligibility requirements for FSA programs. The form became a requirement for payment eligibility beginning with the 2009 crop year, however many program participants have not complied with this requirement.

  • FSA livestock loss assistance

    Livestock producers who incur eligible livestock death losses due to the recent extreme temperatures and other adverse weather events may be eligible for the USDA Farm Service Agency’s Livestock Indemnity Program. LIP provides assistance to livestock owners and contract growers who experience livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to natural disasters.

  • Law creates third weight class for farm vehicles

    A new state law creates a third weight class for registered farm vehicles to ensure that Kentucky farmers are not improperly ticketed and taxed when operating their farm vehicles in other states.
    The new law took effect on March 16, when Gov. Steve Beshear signed Senate Bill 79, sponsored by Sens. Joey Pendleton, Dennis Parrett and Mike Wilson.
    At issue is the International Fuel Tax Agreement, which applies to vehicles of certain designs and characteristics, including a gross vehicle weight or registered weight “exceeding 26,000 pounds.”

  • Pesticide container collection is Aug. 4

    The LaRue County plastic pesticide container recycling project will be conducted again this year. Commonly called rinse and return, the program provides a free, environmentally friendly way to dispose of used plastic pesticide containers.
    Local farmers and other users were encouraged to rinse the containers as they were used and store them until the collection date on Thursday, Aug. 4. Other eligible plastic products can be recycled at the county’s recycling center.
    All recycled containers must be properly rinsed. Triple rinsing is suggested.

  • Saddlebred horse show canceled

    The saddlebred horse show, scheduled for Saturday at the LaRue County Fairgrounds, has been canceled.

    Organizers of the event say many of the participants don't want to get their horses out in the intense heat.

    The LaRue County Fair will continue Monday with other shows, rides and pageants.

    Shooting Sports
    The LaRue County 4-H Shooting Sports Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. July 21 at the New Haven Gun Club.
     
    Dog Club Show
    The LaRue County 4-H Dog Club will hold its show 10:30 a.m. July 23 at the LaRue County Extension Office. The show is open to 4-H Dog Club members only.  Classes will include costume, obedience, showmanship and agility and will be divided by junior and senior age divisions.

  • County Committee Elections

    Aug. 1 – Last day to file nomination forms for county committee. Forms are available at the Hardin/LaRue FSA office or www.fsa.usda.gov.
    Nov. 4 – Ballots mailed to eligible voters
    Dec. 5 – Last day to return voted ballots to FSA office
    Jan. 2 – Elected committee members and alternates take office

    The Hardin/LaRue FSA office is located on Lincoln Parkway.
