  • Be safe this harvest season

    National Farm Safety and Health Week is Sept. 18-24. This year’s theme is Safety Counts - Your Community Depends on it. Let’s talk safety this week.
    Farm accidents are often preventable. With the fall harvest underway, let’s be careful and prevent accidents and tragedies from happening. Harvest season is a busy time for farmers and it is a peak season for agricultural injuries.  Consider the following safety tips.

    Livestock Club meets
    The LaRue County 4-H Livestock Club will meet 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Extension Office. Youth wishing to show livestock through 4-H at the county, district or state level are required to obtain a minimum of six livestock educational hours by attending meetings. For those showing breeding animals, hours must be obtained by June 1. For more information about requirements, contact 4-H Agent Misty Wilmoth at 358-3401.

    Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council Field Day
    The Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council Field Day will be Sept. 8 at UK’s Farm Research Center near Versailles. Tours start at 5:30 p.m. Topics include: Options When Cattle are Pulled Off Fescue in the Summer: Grazing Corn and Bermuda grass; Seedhead Suppression of Tall Fescue; Development of UK’s Own Novel Endophyte/Varieties: KYFA9301 and KYFA9821; and Warm Season Annual Grasses: Opportunities and Limitations. Contact the Extension Office at 358-3401 for more information on the Field Day.  

  • Conservation Writing and Art Contest now underway, deadline Dec. 1

    With a new school year now underway, the search for Kentucky’s finest youth writers and artists also begins. Students in grades 1-12 are encouraged to submit creative writing and artistic entries for the annual Conservation Writing and Art Contests sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau and the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts.

  • Conner elected as delegate to American Angus Association, Marksbury elected alternate delegate

    Kenley E. Conner of Hodgenville has been elected as a delegate to the 128th Annual American Angus Association Convention of Delegates, Nov. 14 in Louisville.

  • New programs presented to local area residents

    Some new program opportunities are being presented for individuals in Hardin, LaRue and Meade counties to see if there is enough interest to offer the programs locally in the three county area.

  • Tree seedlings available from Division of Forestry

    With fall just around the corner, state foresters are encouraging Kentuckians to plan tree-planting activities now by ordering tree seedlings through the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
    Nearly 50 species including white pine, baldcypress, black walnut, white oak, yellow-poplar, dogwood, redbud and more are available by calling 1-800-866-0555. Order forms also are available at forestry.ky.gov.

  • Habitat Day, plant sale set for Sept. 10

    Learn more about the benefits of native plants during Habitat Day Sept. 10 at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort The free event runs 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
    Habitat Day features guest speakers who will provide valuable tips about attracting native wildlife to your backyard. The event includes a special sale of native plants at the Salato Center picnic shelters.

  • New board members selected at Southern States meeting

    Steve Berry of Hodgenville and William Cochran of Rineyville were selected to the Southern States Board of Directors at the annual membership meeting of the Hardin Co-op held Aug. 23 in Hodgenville.
    Berry was elected chairman of the board of directors while James Gardner of Hodgenville was named vice chairman.
    The meeting included a report by Doug McMurry of Danville, Southern States’ district manager.
    Clint Merritt, manager of the Hodgenville branch, reported operating volume of $7.5 million.
