Ryan Quarles, a state representative serving Scott, Owen and Fayette counties, has announced his candidacy for agriculture commissioner on the Republican ticket.
Quarles, 31, stopped by The LaRue County Herald News for a brief visit.
Quarles, who grew up on a family farm in Scott County, is a ninth generation farmer. He is the son of Roger and Bonnie Quarles.
He grew his own crops while still in high school to help pay for college. He graduated as both valedictorian and president of his class, and enrolled at the University of Kentucky.
