  • Fall wheat planting may not be wise

    Corn, soybean, and wheat prices (but not yields) have all done well this year.  As a result, grain farmers may be considering planting wheat this fall and follow with a soybean double crop. However, double-crop soybeans are more susceptible to summer drought and typically yield about 20 percent less than full season soybeans.   • Pumpkin crops do well despite extreme heat and lack of rain

    This year’s excessive heat and lack of rain hasn’t had a major effect on pumpkin and gourd crops, according to Becky Wilmoth of  “Wilmoth’s Pumpkins & More.”
    Wilmoth who owns the pumpkin patch with her husband, Eric and three sons Wade, 8, Levi, 9 and Trent, 17 said this year hasn’t been as bad as it could have been.
    “Most things did pretty well,” said Wilmoth. “Excessive heat and not enough rain caused a few things to not get as big as they usually would have.”

  • Cody Howell wins State Fair auctioneer contest

    Cody Howell of Hodgenville had his eye on winning the coveted FFA Kentucky State Auctioneering Championship for a long time.

    Just last year, good friend and fellow Kentucky Auction Academy graduate Alex Popplewell won the title and proudly displays the championship belt buckle every chance he gets. Now, the two good friends have matching trophies they can wear with their best pair of jeans and their blue corduroy jackets with the familiar FFA gold embroidery.

    Noninsured crop disaster assistance for
    barley and popcorn
    Barley and popcorn are no longer insurable through crop insurance for LaRue County. Producers are required to purchase noninsured crop disaster assistance insurance through Farm Service Agency to maintain eligibility for Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payment (SURE) purposes.
    Contact the FSA office at 765-2702 before Sept. 30 for barley and March 15, 2012 for popcorn.

    Oct. 4 – Wranglers 4-H Horse Club meets at 7 p.m. at the Extension Office
    Oct. 10 – 4-H Livestock Club meets at 6 p.m. at the Extension Office
    Oct. 11 – Cloverbuds (ages 5-8) meet 3:30-4:45 p.m. at the Extension Office; 4-H Poultry Club meets 3:30-5 p.m. at the Extension Office
    Oct. 14 – 4-H Record Book deadline

  • Agricultural Development Board invests $25,000 in Hart County

    The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board, chaired by Gov. Steve Beshear, approved Tim and Wanda Quiggins for $25,000 in county Agricultural Development Funds to construct a multi-purpose facility for agricultural events.
    These funds were contributed by the following counties: Barren ($10,000), Hart ($5,000) and LaRue ($10,000).

  • 4-H points system record sheets due

    The 4-H year runs from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31. With the end of the 2010-11 4-H year, it’s now time for 4-H members to submit their 4-H Awards Point System Record Sheets.
    Record Sheets are simply a record of the 4-H activities or events a particular member has participated in during the past year. Points are assigned for various events, depending on the level of participation.  
    Cloverbuds are eligible to submit a record form as well in order to receive recognition. Cloverbuds are ages 5 to 8.

  • October: Time to identify and fortify calves

    For fall calving cows, the calving season is in full swing. Check cows frequently. Identify calves.
    For others, it is time to get everything ready for the fall-breeding season. Line-up semen and supplies and get your bulls ready to go. Put fall-calving cows on accumulated pasture before the breeding season.
    For spring calving herds have a pregnancy examination of cows. Winter feeding costs can be minimized by eliminating open cows prior to winter feeding. Also, obtain weaning weights of your calves.
