  • AgrAbility program provides assistance to farmers with disabilities

    Kentucky AgrAbility helps farmers with disabilities find ways to continue farming by providing education and assistance so they can cope with or accommodate a disability.
    The program provides technical assistance through direct help to agricultural families with assistive technology, worksite modification and independent living modifications.
    AgrAbility is also the major information resource for farming with a disability and reaches out through direct personal contact; mail and Internet delivery; and public education and outreach.

  • Students learn safety tips at Ag Awareness Day

    According to the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. With the death rate in Kentucky agriculture two to three times higher than the national average it is easily understood why farm safety awareness is important.
    Ag Awareness Day at LaRue County High School offers a chance for 8th graders to learn farm safety and general agricultural awareness from FFA students.

  • 4-H Calendar: Updated 10-12

    Pumpkin decorating
    4-H pumpkin decorating will take place 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Extension Office for 4-H members ages 9-18. Pumpkins will be provided by Hinton’s Orchard. Supplies will be provided for decorating or participants may bring their own if they choose. Pumpkins will be judged by age groups. If your child is not a 4-H member, they are welcome to attend and you may complete a 4-H enrollment form at that time.  

    Record Book deadline
    The 4-H Record Book deadline is Oct. 14.

  • 4-H record books are due Oct. 14

    4-H members are encouraged to submit their record books by Friday, Oct. 14.  Record books will be judged and the winning junior division record books will advance to the district competition.  
    Awards for all record book participants and winners will be presented at the annual 4-H awards banquet on Dec. 5 at the Extension Office.
    Also, all record book participants were invited to attend the achievement trip to Mammoth Cave.

  • Commemorate your fish or game with free online certificates

    A new online tool from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will allow hunters, anglers and trappers to create personalized certificates to help celebrate their experiences.
    Users can upload photos of their fish or game and enter details about their experiences to produce printable certificates suitable for framing.
    The certificate program is available from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife’s website at fw.ky.gov.

  • Flanders ties for 10th in largest registration of Angus beef cattle in Ky.

    Kelly Flanders of Buffalo tied for 10th largest in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Kentucky having recorded 96 head of Angus with the American Angus Association during fiscal year 2011, which ended Sept. 30, according to Bryce Schumann, CEO of the American Angus Association.
    Angus breeders across the nation in 2011 registered 294,975 head of Angus cattle.
    The American Angus Association, headquartered in Saint Joseph, Mo. is the largest beef registry association in the world in terms of both annual registrations and active members.

    Kentucky Grazing Conference
    The 12th annual Kentucky Grazing Conference will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 at the WKU Expo Center, Bowling Green. Topics related to grazing will be discussed. There will also be several exhibits of grazing related products. There is a $15 registration fee. Contact the Extension Office at 358-3401 for more information.

    Pork Producers meet
    The LaRue County Pork Association will meet 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the LaRue County Extension Office in Hodgenville. A meal will be served. All interested individuals are invited to attend.

  • Hay supply for winter may be short

    Hay availability may be short this winter. Due to last year’s drought and this year’s early record rainfall and drought  — both hay quality and yield are down. The variability of yield, quality and number of cuttings indicate the hay supply could get tight.
    To make the most of your hay quantity and quality, store hay inside a barn, where it will remain dry. Remember to store hay in barns that have access in all types of weather. If that is not feasible, cover with a tarp to protect it from the elements.
